Jimmy saw a strange light come
into the eyes of the girl in gray. She
took a step forward and clasped her
hands. Her breast was heaving.
"You brave man!" said the girl in
gray. "- -
Suddenly Jimmy Jarrold" was con

never felt before. And with this con-

sciousness came a sense of the zest
of life, of the blood rushing through
his veins.
"But I'll beat them. I'll beat those
doctors yet!" cried Jimmy exultantly.
He looked at the patrol boat and
knew that she had won the race. And
somehow he felt he had won his race
too, against death and against self.

Here's a picture of a fellow get
ting his hand chewed off by a wolf.
Tough on him, wasn't it? Anyway,
le is the guy Tuesday was named
after.
You see, it was this way. A long
time ago the old Norse Gods and god
desses became peeved at a wicked
spirit wolf named Fenris, so they
made a chain out of the footsteps of
a cat, the beards of women, the roots
of stones, the breath of fishes, the
nerves of bears and other things hard
to find.
Then they went to the wolf and
said: "Let us put this pretty chain
around your beautiful neck."
"Nay, nay," replied the wolf, "I'm
too old a bird to be caught that
way."
"Mercy!" exclaimed the gods,
you don't suspect us, do you? We'll
take the chain right off just as soon
as we try it on."
"Oh, well," replied the wolf, "I
don't just exactly suspect, but I like
to be on the safe side. If one of you
gods will put his hand in my mouth
while you put the chain on I guess i
can trust you to take it off again."
Tyr, the god of war, was the only
one .brave enough to put his hand in
the wolf's mouth.
As soon as Fenris found himself
tied up hard and fast with the won
derful chain he bit off the war god's
hand.
It is curious that the French name
for Tuesday is Mardi that is, the
day of Mars, also a war god like Tyr,
who gives us Tyr's day or Tuesday.
Tomorrow we'll tell you how
Wednesday was named,
