The $8 John Patterson sent in to
the strike fund yesterday came from
a fe wunion granite cutters who are
in sympathy with the cause of the
clothing workers. In his letter ac
companying the gift Patterson said:
"There surely are some tightwads
hereabouts. You couldn't penetrate
their pocketbooks with a bull-set (a
bull-set is a heavy tool used for cut
ting granite.) Ingersoll, speaking on
the stingy man, said: ' had rather be
a beggar and spend my last dollar
like a king than be a king and spend
my money like a beggar.' "
"What sore of a Christmasis there
going to be in the homes of the strik
ing garment workers?" inquires A
Forum Writer, sending along another
dollar. "Smoked herring, dry bread
and stale, black tea and nothing else
that will make the Christmas feast
in some thousands of home. No
presents? None, except in a few
homes, perhaps! No toys for the
kiddies?" The writer knows of one
woman who spent 30 cents on toys
for her five children, and she remark
ed that no other family in her block
had so much money to spend with
Santa Claus.
