Does public ownership pay?
It does! San Francisco has proven
that it does! A few years ago, San
Francisco, tiring of the had service
given by the privately-owned street
car lines, started a municipal street
car line in. open opposition to the pri
vate company. The first year, with
only a single line, it cleared $46,000.
."Now San Francisco has $5,000,
000 invested in 42 miles of car lines
with ample equipment," said M. M.
O'Shaughnessy, city engineer of San
Francisco, who is head of the munic
ipal car system and who was in Chi
cago last week.
Operating in opposition to the pri
vate company which has lines Exactly
paralleling the municipal lines, the
city lines had a gross profit of $2,
225,000 last year. This afforded a net
profit of $900,000.
"The municipal line has costliei
equipment than the private company,
better tracks, heavier cars and mo
tors of 240-horsepower to each car,
as against 200-horsepower to eacl
car of the private company. The
car lines make better speed.
"The people have faith in the mu
nicipal lines. The city can sell iti
street car bonds for 4y2 per cent,
while the private company is forced
to give 6 per cent on its bonds to get

Francisco proposes to buy and build
other lines as fast as they can be ac
quired. Eventually the city will own
every mile of street car track."
