SCHOOL BOARD BATTLE
The Loebs are at it again. This
time it is young Max Loeb, union la
bor's backer on the board of educa
tion, who is taking a hard rap at
Jacob Loeb, president oithe board,
anti-Teachers' Federation man and
brother of Albert Loeb of Sears, Roe
buck & Co. .
Pres. Loeb offered to buy lunches
for all board members who would
stay in the board rooms and work on
the budget throughout the whole
day. Max says this may influence
some of the members to vote on the
budget to Pres. Loeb's liking.
He asked Loeb to withdraw his
offer and let every one pay for their
own lunches. Pres. Loeb refused. So
Max threatens to introduce a resolu
tion against the plan.

Washington, Jan. 26. Negotia
tions between U. S. and Germany for
settlement of Lusitania's sinking
reached stage of battle over words
between Berlin foreign office and
state department, with Ambassador
Bernsdorff and Sec. Lansing fighters.
Two governments today were
squarely opposed on vital points in
negotiations, admissions by Germany
of illegally and wrongfully sinking
Lusitania. U. S., it was understood,
has flatly rejected as unsatisfactory
evasive phraseology of settlement
terms thus far suggested by Ambas
sador Bernstorff.
TELEGRAPH BRIEF
