a little tame. He heaved it This is
how it happened.
Haughton gave a banquet .at which
George Stallihgs, Brave- manager,
newspaper men and others were
guests.. There were, of course,
speeches. One. speaker referred to
the wrist watch.
Haughton grabbed at his left wrist,
quickly unbuckled the.little strap and
heaved the watch -at the speaker.
"Take that thing," he said. "I'm
tired of hearing about it"
And so, the only wrist watch in
baseball passed out of the game.
Haughton's entrance into baseball
not only disclosed that he wore a
wrist watch, but other things. He's
a real 'fellow,' a big-'manwith a big
brain.- oAnd he can talk. J,
t Through al.l his years -as. head -of
football at Harvard, Haughton was
disliked by newspaper men. He
wouldn't talk to them. He treated
them with cold disdain. Now, it is
discovered, he was not himself then.
He was working under rules.
'But as soon as Percy got into base
ball he became a conversationalist
Haughton has offices on State
street in Boston. One room is used
by his stenographer. The other is
Percy's thinking room. In this room
he has built championship football
teams. In this room he worked out
the plays that beat Yale, Princeton
and everybody else.
A visit to Haughton's thinking
room reveals that he is the cham
pion chair tilter of the country. If
there is anyone who can tilt back
in a chair and balance himself long
er than Haughton can he has not
A visit also discloses that he is not
the sort of man who would be sus
pected of wearing a wrist watch. He's
a fjghter. Woe to the man who, la
boring under the impression he is
dealing with a nambypamby individ
ual, tries to put anything over on the
new president of the Braves.
