Jack Monroe, former fighter who
enlisted in the British army, is in a
London hospital recovering from an
operation performed after a German
shell took off his right arm at the
elbow.
The arm was the one that gained
fame for Jack when he knocked'
down Jim Jeffries while Jeff was
champion.
Monroe was sergeant in the
"princess Pelt's" regiment which was
almost entirely wiped out in the sec
ond battle of Ypres.

FOR BOYS OF CITY
Stirred by the Washington Park
robbery Mayor Thompson announced
last night that a board of recreation
would be appointed to eliminate the
poolroom evil. Careful supervision
of all billiard hallB and establish
ment of others for minors only will
be the work of the body to be ap
pointed by the mayor.
Encouragement of sports both out
door and gymnasium, extension of
bathing beach opportunities and for
mation of social centers will be some
of the duties of the board. There
will be 21 members.

SISTERS DEFEND HOUSE OF
GOOD SHEPHERD
Sisters of the House of Good Shep
herd, replying to a bill of injunction
which J! H. Straley, 4410 N. Clark st,
representing Guardians of Liberty,
prepared to file against the city in
protest against further payment of
city money to the institution on the
ground that it is sectarian and that
girls of tender (years are compelled
to work long hours, as published in
The Day Book of Jan. 22, have is
sued the following statement:
"No girl under 16 years of age is
employed in the laundry.
"No girl under 14 years of age is
employed on electric sewing ma
chines. "Working hours in all departments
are from 8:30 a. m. to 11:30 a. m.,
1:30 p. m. to 5(p. m. A recess is
given at 10 a. ml and 2:30 p. m. for
lunch. All girls under 18 years of
age attend school half a day. All
over 18 years who desires may attend
school. ,
"We make no distinction as to the
religious beliefs of those who enter;
we have at present 31 non-Catholics
under our' care, some having already
spent two years in the institution."

Owing to the congestion of ship
ping at Marseilles, Genoa, and other
leading ports of the Mediterranean,
a number of vessels are unloading
cargoes at the port of .Monaco, in
the principality of that name, re
nowned hitherto because it has with
in its borders the great gambling
center of Monte Carlo. It is said that
port charges at Monaco are most
reasonable and that so far there is
no congestion.
