Firmin Cassignol, Frenchman of
various titles, who has come to the
United States for a chance at Willie
Hoppe and the 18.1 and 18.2 balk line
billiard titles, has been playing since
he was six years of age, he says.
In his early youth Cassignol liked
athletes as well as he liked his meals.
He was quite a whale in the running
broad jump in his native land and was
a star gymnast
After he began chasing the ivory
balls around the green cloth the game
fascinated .him. so he paid little atten
tion .to any other sport. He competed
as an amateur until he was 35 years
of age, then turned professional.
The French star, since he came to
this country, has trimmed some of
the good ones, including Welker
Cochran, the boy wonder.
A few years ago Calvin Demarest,
one of the leading United States play
ers, tackled Cassignol in Paris. Tackle
is all he did do. They played five
games of 250 points each. Jn each
game the Frenchman won the bank
and ran out the string without De
marest getting a single point.
