"What is the real secret of smart
'dressing in this 1916 year of fa
shion?" is the poser I put to Mme.
Alia Ripley, noted designer of styles.
Quick came her answer: "The point
about being modishly dressed this
spring is the 'tout-ensemble' as the
French say the general effect from
top to toe. There must be a sequence
of line a high hat must be worn
with a high collar, the collar and the
accessories hand bag, muff and ho
siery must harmonize with the
gown, or else they must be in decided
Then just to illustrate her little
preachment the "maker of modes'
sketched for me this charming outfit
which proves the importance of the
general effect striped hat and strip
ed purse, low collar and flat hat. The
"tout-en-semble" is perfect
The girl who lived in the "good
old days" was also pestered by lec
tures on how much better girls were
in the good older days.
