working class x- .. L icd. Regard
less of which country wins a war,
there is just one loser the worker.
He bears the burden of war, finances
it, has the pleasure tjf. being killed
and letting his children pay for it If
it was not for th workesr ignorance
there would be no war, except of the
Why should the toilers fight the bat
tles of the capitalistic class and fight
for victories which will not be theirs?
Or are there any differences the
American worker would fike to settle
with the worker of any other country
through war? Can it be that the
same Russell who has for years been
preaching international socialism and
the identity of class interest should
now be crying out hysterically for a
larger army and navy?
But, they argue, well never use the
army for aggression, but only for de
fence. Well, that's just the idea!
They'll see to it that it will be aggres
sion from the other side. You know
the plutes are hungry for war orders.
That is just the reason that they in
sist upon their neutral rights of going
upon a dynamite-laden ship bound
for belligerent countries without in
curring any risks whatever.
Think it over! Supposing we had
Teddy the Great in the White House,
isn't it the most natural thing in the
world that we would now be in the
present war "protecting our neutral
rights"? Whether we are to have
any more wars depends entirely upon
the working class. How in the name
of common sense can any one con
sistently call himself an international
socialist and at the same time be hol
lering for a larger army and navy?
What has gotten into Chas. Edward
Russell. David M. Comelsky.
LET .PREACHERS REPENT.
While the devil has been holding high
carnival in the war zones, he is also
quite active' in Chicago. Wherever
you turn you see his operations, and
no effort is made to "destroy the
j&orks pfth& deyji" hx ihose who
claim to be ministers of God. They
call evil good and good evil. Is it any
wonder that God has seen fit to per
mit this war and wholesale misery?
There is no way out of the difficulty
either, as far as we can see, unless
people come to an honest repent
ance. History proves that whenever the
people get into sin, trouble followed
and continued until some one raised
up to show them their mistakes,
then, upon their repentance, restora
tion followed. Man is by nature re
ligiously disposed. If we didn't know
about God we would worship some
thing. The great trouble the world has to
face, and which causes so much con
fusion, is the multiplicity of divisions
in the so-called Christian church.
Every sect seems to have some truth
that accounts for its existence, and
it seems as if not very many seem
capable of expounding more than one
particular aspect. Now the 'best
thing that could happen to restore
order out of this chaos is for the
churches to be honest and clean up.
Let the ministers start the procession
and do what is right. Then the peo
ple will follow. Why not disband all
these human organizations? What
good are they doing anyway? As
far as can be seen, each church is
contending for a few more members
and trying to pay their preacher a
little more or less than the other fel
low is getting, and what for? Can
we accuse any minister in Chicago
of ever getting an answer from God?,
As the seat of the trouble is in the
spiritual condition of the world,
would it not be a good idea if the A
world would come to repentance?
This wouldn t be an impossibility, if.
the preachers would repent first.
Then the way would be opened up so
that the people would recignize the
Christ While sin exists in the hearts
of people they would not know the
Deliverer, and how could the Christ
do the work with a sinful people. Let
