BOXING SPORTS OF ALL SORTS BASEBALL
The fact that Frank McMullen has
"been placed at third base for the first
squad of White Sox doesn't neces
sarily mean that theyoungster is go
ing to hold down that "berth through
out the season, but it does begin to
look as though there will be at least
one recruit with the infield when
the season starts.
McMullen is highly touted, and,
though he has had only two days to
show his wares, has already made a
good impression, with the oldsters of
the club. He fields well and handles
himself competently at bat.
Zeb Terry, the second infielding
recruit for the left side of the dia
mond, also is debutting impressively.
His fielding is considered remarka
ble, putting him on a par with Buck
Weaver in that department Wheth
er he can hit big league pitching is
another question. Weaver has been
through the mill and is experienced
and it is probable he will be able to
fight of all comers for his position.
Sox were divided into a couple of
squads for a practice game, but it
amounted to nothing, so far as de
termining the worth of the men is
concerned. They are not far enough
advanced to cut loose with anything
worth while, and are still safeguard
ing their whips. Batting by the reg
ulars was also light, for the reason
that they were facing Jim Scott and
Joe Benz, who have had lots of prac
tice and opened up with an assort
ment of puzzling benders.
This is the very best kind of train
ing for the batters and will bear
fruit.
Tomorrow the first squad plays
Dallas and the seconds will be pitted
against Ft Worth.
Pruning of the Cubs since the team
reached Tampa has so far been con
fined to the pitchers, but Manager
Tinker is about ready to do away
with some of the other athletes. Out
fielder Pete Allison is sure to take a
return trip to the minors, and Alex
McCarthy is also slated for another
city.
McCarthy will probably land with
some other team in the major
leagues. Philadelphia could use him
nicely as a utility man, as the Quaker
infield is by no means strong.
Farming relations have been es'
tablished with Prank Chance's Los
Angeles team by the Cubs, and some
of the castoffs may follow George
Zabel and Bradley Hogg to that
stamping ground. California is a
fine place for young men to learn
baseball, and the big leagues are
studded with fellows who have come
from there.
George Pierce had another chance
to pitch to the 'regulars yesterday
and failed to last one inning, being
plentifully belted, and also tossing a
few wild ones. George is making a
last ditch fight this spring, and if he
does not show impressively in the
exhibition games on the trip north
he may not see Chicago this year as
a member of the Cubs.
Tinker is plentifully supplied with
veteran twirlers and can pick and
choose in an effort to get the best of
the crop. It is more than likely that
not more than one recruit heaver
will be carried with the club during
the coming campaign.
Rollie Zeider arrived at Tampa to
day and was immediately put in
charge of the second team. Tinker
hopes to have Zeider in condition to '
play the role of first utility man to
the infield, with Mulligan as a sec
ond line of defense.
Fred Fulton and Jim Flynn mix for
ten rounds at Milwaukee tonight and
the result will have a bearing on the
fistic future of the Rochester giant.
If he whips Flynn he can .continue on
his career without interruption. If
the Pueblo fireman is victor Fulton
must begin over again. Milwaukee
betting men are making Fulton a
slight favorite.
