The United States Golf ass'n has agreed to give Francis Ouimet and two other members of the Woodland (Mass.) Golf club; branded as pro fessionals, a hearing and a chance to defend themselves. Ouimet was declared a professional because he is selling golf supplies. Several golfers throughout the country who are engaged in sporting goods houses will be eagerly watch ing for a final decision from the na tional body. The amateur line must be drawn somewhere, of course, hut it does not seem that it should be ap plied to sporting- goods salesmen. The Western Golf ass'n is somewhat up in the air and local golfers, are of the opinion that-the governing body of -this section of the country has' not so far followed the lead of the U. S. G. A. It is time the situation -was clarified, so golfers of all sections of the country will know where they stand. If the rule applies to salesmen it seems reasonable to apply it to well known golfers who are writing for the papers and magazines. When a golfer through a newspaper or mag azine gives some instruction as to how the game should be played he is. under a strict interpretation of the rules, somewhat of a pro. That is, if he is paid for his dope. Now thaj the U. S. G. A. has start ed, it must continue to the limit or let Ouimet play as an amateur. o o PLAN TO GIVE SMOOT CHANCE 10 PROSECUTE CABARETS Harry E. Smoot, att'y for the Ju venile Prptective ass'n,' will probably be appointed a special ass't state's -att'y, in order that he may prosecute the cases against cabaret owners started by his organization.. That is, if a tip given out at the City Hall ' is true. . . The cases against the Schiller, Elite, Delmar, Perfecto and Reising 'cafes were called, before Judge Dolan yesterday and continued until May 19. It isald that the City Hall crowd are very anxious that Hoyne take up the work of presecutiag the cases, so as to . save the city administra- tion from getting in bad with the "wets' Chief Healey said, after a talk" with Capt Healy and Capt. O'Brien, that he believed the district around 31st and Cottage Grove av. would be" improved. Corporation Counsel Etteteon took a wallop at the liquor business yes terday when lie gave out an opinion that the city could not issue saloon or wholesale liquor licenses to places within the four-mile Bmit of -tb.' Northwestern university. The limit runs south to Devoft av. Twenty-nine saloons and sixteen v wholesale houses are hit by this; opinion, it is probable that ail these may lose their licenses. o c- ,A Pan-American fair to be held in San Antonio, Tex., two years hence will- be in commemoration of- the Franciscan brothers who early brought civilization and religion to the great southwetsern corner of North America. o o Automobile tires of synthetic rub ber have shown no wear fefter more than 4,000 miles.
