The tentative platform of the G. 0.
P. has been completed by a subcom
mittee of the committee on resolu
tions and will be presented to the
full committee today.
As was expected, the chief points
are "Americanism," a navy that will
fear no other power in the world"
and a big standing army. No men
tion is made of equal suffrage or
prohibition.
The state militia is encouraged in
the training of a citizen soldiery (no
federalization of militia; no mention
of compulsory military service).
Closer co-operation between the gov
ernment and American industries,
so they can be used in the nation's
defense is also asked.
The president's foreign policy and
his attitude in the Mexican situation
are strongly condemned.
The tariff plank demands that the
big industries should be protected by
a "reasonable tariff." The Under
wood law is attacked and its repeal
demanded. Tariff commission again
favored.
Merchant marine by subvention
and other legislation is recommend
. ed, such subvention to be in pay
ment for services actually performed
and the vessels to pass under control
of U. S. in emergency.
Promise is made- for the creation
of a budget system to eliminate
"wasteful appropriations by con
gress." Child labor and women's hours
legislation is asked for factories
which do an interstate commerce
business. The recall' and the initia
tive and referendum were turned
down.
