James A. Patten of Evanston, king

Patten didn't put the shot, jump
hurdles or sprint the century in 10
seconds. He has not even appeared
in a track suit in the gym. As far as

injhe tank. But he has been of ser
vice to the athletic department of the
university even if he has not car
ried the pigskin over the line for a
touchdown,
The wheat king gave Northwest
ern the largest gym in the world. He
has repeatedly made donations to the
Evanston institution. So when 100
buttons were distributed to athleties
of the university, past and present,
James A. Patten stepped to the plat
form just like every other honor man
and took his button.
It will entitle him to a free admis
sion to any sporting events held at
Northwestern university.
Coach Chas. E. Courtney of the
Cornell crews denies he will resign
this year. But he adds that he will
remain only in an advisory capacity.
Johnny Evers'will be out of the
game for a few days because of a
strained nerve in his right arm. He
injured it during a series with New
York.
Rudy Unholz, a spectacular char
acter of the prize ring only a few
years ago, is dead. At the Glendale
sanitarium, Los Angeles, Unholz,
who had been ill with tuberculosis
for several months, breathed his last
He was 34 years old. Unholz fought
in the lightweight class and was a
high class ring man in his time. He
hattled all the topnotchers, but
seemed to lack a bit .of the skill that
goes in the makeup of champions.
Golfers must indeed be patient peo
ple. For instance, it takes four men
three hours to complete 18 holes and
exchange beans, during which time
they could play:
Two games of baseball
Two games of gootball.
Thirty games of tennis.
From 10 to 56 games of Kelly pool.
Bowl a dozen or more games.
Play 12 games of pinochle.
Box 60 rounds.
Or, make one move in chess.
