ONLY UNION RESTAURANT HELP
CAN BE HIRED AT CITY PIER
Only union cooks, waiters and
other restaurant workers may be
employed in the gigantic restaurant
which is soon to be opened on the
municipal pier.
At the request of the Chi. Fed. of
Labor the harbor committee of the
city council last night inserted a
clause in the contract with John Z.
Vogelsang who was awarded the
restaurant and catering contract for
the pier that only union labor can
be employed by him on the pier. This
will affect about 300 workers.
Vogelsang has been a bitter enemy
of oiganizeu labor. His restaurant
on Madison street is nonunion, and
as head of the Restaurant Keepers'
ass'n he has waged war upon the
Cooks' and Waiters' unions since
1903. But he had to agree to employ
union workers on the pier.
