eration, and because they were public-spirited citizens
who had had the, courage to oppose legislation sought by
Big Business and to fight for legislation for the protec
tion of the men, women 'and children of the working
Big Business was too smart to make known its real reason for its bit- A,
ter antagonism to the Teachers' Federation. It couldn't. say it hated Mar- w
garet Haley and her courageous associates because they forced rich tax
dodgers to pay their taxes. It wouldn't sound nice for it to admit that it
hated the Teachers' Federation because its members gave the.ir support to
legislation preventing the exploitation of children in factories, or tried to
get a minimum wage for the girls in department stores. ,
It couldn't publicly say it hated these teachers because they did alf
they could to better conditions and help get a living wage for the workers!
It couldn't admit that it hated them because they.opposed the plan of
Big Business to grab the public school system in order to train the chil
dren of the workers to become workers and the children of the bosses to'
So the tools of Big Business lied and tried to make the public believe
they were trying to make the schools more efficient and to protect the
interests of children.
Nor were they above such trickery as fanning the fire of religious pre
judice and seeking to make Protestant parents believe that the Catholic
church was trying to control the school system, and that the Catholic
church controlled the Teachers Federation.
The endorsement of the Jake Loeb rule by the Methodist preachers
was proof enough that under the surface the religious argument was
If the Catholic church or any other church actually controlled the
Teachers' Federation that would be reason enough for driving the Federa
tion from the schools. For no church should have a controlling influence
in the management of the public schools.
But that isn't so. If it were true The Day Book would be the first to
publish the fact and lead a fight against the Federation.
Big Business knows it isn't so, but has made use of the argument to
induce members of the board to play the game with Jake Loeb to destroy!

Those earnest and well-meaning parents who have fallen for this
political bunk have unwillingly lent their aid to designing politicians who,
have struck the deadliest blow ever dealt the public school system of
I believe that the Teachers' Federation has been the most powerful
influence for the protection of the public school system and the children
themselves. Its influence has always been used to prevent the capture of
the school system by low-brow political bosses who wanted to make teach
ers' jobs part of the political spoils system.
Unless the people of Chicago stop this outrageous raid, and stop It
NOW, the time is not far off when they will be entrusting the education of
their children to cowardly sycophantic, boot-licking teachers who will not
dare say the.ir souls are their own because they will be a subordinate part
