in order to get the comedy into the
antics which make up the situations.
For instance, in the story of "Tne
Judge," in which Chas. Murray was
featured with me, I was cast as a
rather forward manicure girl. In or
der to play the part realistically, Di
rector Mack Sennett ordered me to
"go down town and have my nails.
manicured at least a dozen times.
"A dozen times!" I replied, "why,
Mr. Sennett, I would be ashamed to
look a manicure girl in the face."
"Well," he finally compromised,
"then go into at least ten manicure
parlors and stand around as though
you were waiting for some one and
then say, 'Well, I might as well have
a polish while I wait' I want you to
play this part as if you had been a
manicure girl all your life."
I did as he directed, so if any of my
headers have seen me in "The
Judge," please remember that be
sides the hard work the scenario
calls for, I visited ten manicure shops
in one day learning to play my part
from the young women who were do
ing my nails.
This is only one instance of how
careful we are to pjay the part as it
should be, and is one of the many
reasons why working before the
camera is harder than on the speak
ing stage. On the stage one may
play the same part for a year, but in
the studio you may play 52 parts in
a year and find them all different
In summing up the making the
motion picture comedy I will say that
the outstanding features are that the
plays are not at all funny in the
throes of construction, that there is
considerable personal risk to actors
in the production and that a movie
comedian at work is as serious as a
preacher. The laughing is not done
by the makers, but by the watchers
of a comedy film.
