rickety stairs. The tramp protruded
an apologetic face beyond the door
way. "Don't be scared," he spoke with
humility. "It's only one of my night
mares. I broke through thunder!"
He stared at the scattered gold,
and John and Nellie stared, too.
"Oh, can't you understand?" cried
the quick-witted Nellie, but John only
silently shook his head.
"Grandfather Ellis, of course!"
pronounced Nellie excitedly.
"You mean he hid his gold?"
"Between the floors," declared Nel
lie. "Don't you remember how he
used to hint at a rich reward for
those who cared for him in his de
clining years? And when he died he
tried to tell us something that was on
his mind. Oh, John, we won't have
to leave the old home now!"
The tramp stood taking in the
"Boss," he spoke at last, "if I've
brought you good luck I'm the hap
piest man in the world!"
He had, indeed, and he shared the
glad fortune by giving up "the road"
and settling down as a loyal, faith
ful helper about the place to which
his fortunate nightmare had brought
joy and plenty.

July 26, 1733 A letter of this date
tells of the failure of an attempt to
import Illinois cattle into Canada.
The feat of freezing live fish and
reviving them several weeks or
months later has been achieved by
the Swiss scientist, M. Pictet. The
scientist put 28 live fish in a box
that contained water rich in oxygen,
in which several pieces of ice floated.
The temperature of the water was
then reduced slowly until it froze. At
the end of about two months the
cake was gradually thawed and the
fish were found alive,
