for the Dutch government a similar
scheme for handling other staple
food products. The government iB
shying -away as long as it can, but
there is no other way to handle the
situation. Also, no other way to
meet the increasing clamors of the
working population, now squeezed
hard between growing prices and
stationary wages.
Tbe once popular queen has lost
much of her popularity, partly be
cause of her German husband and
partly for other reasons.
There is a rising tide of resentment
because the government has done
nothing but offer wordy protests
against the torpedoing of steamers.
It is a stormy season in a neutral
country that had nothing to do with
the war and yet has been sorely hurt
by these two black years of it.

SIXTY SALOONS OPEN
Sixty saloonkeepers were reported
yesterday for violation of the Sunday
closing laws. Mayor Thompson will
get the list today. Motorcycle police-J
men were used to collect evidence
for the first time. Most of the viola
tions were reported from the South
Side. Acting Cap't Atkinson, Stock
Yards station, caught a few saloons
open "back o' th' yards."

TODAY IN ILLINOIS HISTORY
August 14, 1724. The French
ministry recommended that the set
tlers in the Upper Mississippi valley
make war on the Fox Indians and if
possible exterminate them.
MERELY COMMENT
Hinsdale sassiety women will have
a dog show. v
Many sassiety women who have
no babies have husbands and dogs.
But they have dog shows instead
of husband shows.
Mr. Hughes is still seeing things
through his hindsight
In the meantime, President Wilson
is tackling another big job.
Mr. Hughes can't use his hind
sight on tne railroad strike, so why
not tell us what his foresight sug
gests. Would he seize the railroads, turn
the army loose on the railroad em
ployes or let nature take her course?
Or will he merely keep on throw
ing pop bottles at the umpire?
There is still another advantage
National Guard officers have over
the enlisted men
When they get tired of border duty
they resign.
We don't recall many of them re
signing when on duty as strikebreak
ers, however.
Besides gunning for Big Bill the
Reverend, Mr. Lyle is also running
for office
And probably has been told that it
pays to advertise.
Eithec all of the saloons should be
kept closed on Sunday or all should
be permitted to keep open.
Using the law to reward the ad
ministration friends and punish its
enemies is bum policy.
Mr. Hughes 'charges that the Wil
son administration has made some
bad appointments.
Was there ever an administration
that didn't?
Or was there ever one that didn't
make some good ones?
A president must be judged by his
batting average, Even Ty Cobb
doesn't make a hit every time he
goes to bat
Ty has been known to strike out.
