Mayor. You don't have to knuckle
down to any party, faction, boss, lob
byist, reformer, newspaper or spe
cial organization or interest so long
as you honestly and firmly stand on
that platform. You're no god. Don't
try to be one. Be human that's all
and it's enough. Paste that state
ment of yours in your hat, and
whenever some fool political adviser
tries to show you how to make a
smart play, read it again, then put
on your hat and tell them to go jump
in the lake.
It's platform enough. You don't
need another plank in it. You're not
governor of Illinois you're mayor
of Chicago. The loop isn't Chicago.
Neither is the Anti-Saloon league.
Nor the. United Societies. Nor the
Masons. Nor the Guardians of Lib
erty. Nor the Catholics, Protestants
or Jews. The people are Chicago,
Bill the plain people men, women
and children who want to get all
they can out of living in Chicago.
What the majority of them want
can't be bad or evil or vicious. All you
need be sure of is of what a majority
wants. Back up, Bill, and start all
over again. Nobody can square you
with the people but YOU.
