JAKEY'S FRIEND SPEAKS.
"The Teachers' Federation, through
its business agent, has exercised over
the school management 'a sort of
domination partly political and part
ly plain terrorism," says a Daily
News editorial Sept 18.
When the school board" tried to
tak'e away from he school teachers
of Chicago the right to elect the
teachers' pension board instead of
having that board's majority appoint
ed by the school board, then the
teachers lobbied in the state legisla
ture and carried on an agitation that
beat the pension fund sharks.
Is this what Vic Lawson and
v George Sikes call "domination" and
"President Loeb and other mem
bers forming a majority of the board
summarily dropped 68 (members of
the teaching force, some for insub
ordination and some for incompe
tence," says the Daily News.
Of the 68 teachers dropped 42 were
marked by Sup't John D. Snoop as
"efficient," "superior" and "good,"
and of these 42 there were 37 mem
bers of the Teachers' Federation.
Pres.Jakey Loeb, millionaire real es
tate and fire insurance operator, re
fuses to specify what were the acts
of "insubordination" charged against
the teachers dropped frdm service,
though the universal presumption is
that the teachers were fired because
they belonged 'to the Teachers' Fed- ,
eration. In belonging to the f edera-t
tion the teachers were following their .
rights as outlined in court decisions
in actions where Pres.' Jakey Loeb-.
and his majority were defeated. That '
is, the courts say the teachers
through membership in their organ
ization are NOT "insubordinate,"'
and it is the real estate and fire in-
surance head and heart of Jakey.,,
Loeb which makes the momentous'
decision that the teachers are guilty
"Mayor Thompson is soon to ap-'
point eight 'new members to the'
school board. He ought to select x
eight of the best-known, most com
petent and most public-spirited men
and women of Chicago," says the
Daily News. Then to show what kind
of timber it wants 'Mayor Thompson
to put on the board, it points out
that Pres. Jakey Loeb is the right
stuff and more heroes like Jakey are
So this is the proper place to say
that two of the best appointments
Maypr Thompson has made since he
became mayor are those of Trustees
Max Loeb and Harris Huehl, who
have had the nerve and the intelli
gence to stand up and fight week
after week the civil service wrecker
and big business tool, Jakey Loeb.
WOODROWS RENT MONEY.
President Wilson, who was proffered
the use of Shadow Lawn, his Long
Branch summer home, rent free, has
sent his check for ?2,500, the equiv
alent of the rent which he would
have paid-, to be divided among the
Monmouth County, N. J., hospitals.
The president, of course, will now
be charged with "grand standing" by
his political foes. If sp, it's a brand
new play and will get the bleachers,
all right. '
