Northwestern gridders got two
stiff workouts under the eye of
Coach Murphy, thorough drill in the
rudiments of the game being the
menu for the day. Northwestern
prospects are said to be better than
for the last few seasons, but the past
record of the Purple does not give
much cause for hurrahing.
Bob Zupke is using Bart Macom
ber'at quarterback in initial practice
at Illinois and it is "probable the for
mer Oak Parker will hold down that
job throughout the season.
SOX CHANCES DO NOT IMPROVE
RED SOX STILL WINNING
The White Sox remain a game and
a half back of the Boston Red Sox
and have climbed into second place x
over the unfortunate Tigers, but af
fairs are not brightened to any ex
tent by the results of yesterday's two
most important pasfimes.
Boston seems to have the class of
afpennant winner, while Tigers and
local Sox are unable to stand the
pace at moments of stress. Carri
gan came here and won two out of
three, when every play had a bearing
on the pennant He has taken two
straight froin the Tigers and is in a
fair way to sweep the series. If he
does, western contenders can pre
pare for next season, for there will
be nothing doing for them this fall.
After today the schedule will be in
favor of the Red Sox, if any one can
claim the edge. They have four
games with the Indians, and Pohl's
club is not a formidablerganization.
Detroit gets Washington for four
games and should 'take three. We
draw the Yanks and are sure of a
battle each, afternoon.
Though bnly a game and a half
from the top, but few. of the Sox
players appear to realize they have
a possible chance for the pennant
and the resultant coin of the world's
series. A few members of the cast
are playing up-and-doing baseball,
but others seem to be thinking of the
fine hunting to be enjoyed this fall.
Eddie Collins drew rods of praise s
yesterday, but he is entitled to" more J
today. He soaked four important
hits in as many times up, tricked the.
Macks out of a possible run on one
occasion and was in the thick of
things throughout 'Eddie hasn't
given up hope. His batting average
is steadily climbing and should be in- .
