MURDERER OF BUSINESS AGENT
SENTENCED FOR LIFE
Robert Johnson, negro murderer
of Alex Alex, business agent of White
City Council, plasterers' union, was
found guilty by a jury in Judge
Fitch's court yesterday and was sen
tenced to life imprisonment.
Johnson shot Alex down last
spring, for seemingly no provocation.
State's Att'y Hoyne delayed bringing
the case to trial until he could se
cure evidence that he felt sure would
clinch the case against the union
man's slayer and it did.
CLERK SHOOTS BANKER AFTER
QUARREL OVER MONEY
Stephen Zagar, manager of John
Zagar & Co., private bankers, at 2400
Wentworth av., was shot four times
and will probably die, following an
altercation with Prank Cviich, a
clerk employed in the bank. Zagar
is- said to have accused Cviich of ap
propriating the bank's iunds to his
own use. Cviich, according to the
police, resented the charges and was
attacked by Zagar with a knife. Then
Cviich shot. He was arrested. Zagar
was taken to Wesley hospital!
CARLSTROM LANDS AFTER
FLYING 450 MILES
Erie, Pa., Nov. 2. Victor Carl
strom was forced to land here at
11:25 on his flight from Chicago to
New York on account of a leaky
gasoline tank. He has given up hope
of reaching New York by night
Carlstrom's actual flying time was
four hours and 16 minutes from Chi
cago, covering the distance of ap
proximately 450 miles in average
time of 108 miles an hour.
Despite the fact that he descended,
he established new American non
stop record, the previous best being
his own flight of 416 miles from New
port News to New York.
The New York Central's fastest
train, the Twentieth Century Limit
ed, makes the distance from Chi
cago to Erie, 436 miles, in nine hours. ,
