VON BERNSTORFF GETS MAIL
BROUGHT BY DEUTSCHLAND
Washington, Nov. 3. German Am
bassador Von Bernstorff spent most
of today plowing through 800 pounds
of embassy mail brought from Ger
many on the sub-merchantman
Deutschland. Six big pouches were
delivered to him last night by Dr.
George Ahrens of the embassy staff
and First Officer Krapohl of the sub
marine. As soon as it arrived the
ambassador started methodically
through it, and he resumed the job
early today.
Whether the Deutschland is to
carry United States mail on her re
turn trip has not yet been definitely
decided, Ambassador Bernstorff said
today. He has yet to learn if Capt.
Koenig is authorized to carry postal
mail this trip and also to communi
cate with the postoffice department.

MAKE ARRESTS IN ALLEGED
SUBWAY BOMB PLOT
New York, Nov. 3. Six men, said
by the police to be former subway
guards, were arrested today in con
nection with the 110th sL, Bronx,
subway explosion, Oct. 24.
Michael Herlihy, said to be finan
cial secretary of one of the striking
unions, confessed, the police say,
that there was a plot to place bombs
in the subway at Times Square and
elsewhere.
