A concerted move Is being made by
the American Newspaper Publishers''
'association to get the big Sunday
newspapers to cut down their size
for that's where millions of tons of
paper are consumed. This is but one
of the many moves to cut down the
-consumption of paper. The trouble
with the Sunday papers is that they
carry so much advertising they have
to fill up the kinks and cracks around
the advertising with bunk, slobber
Anyhow, it will be a good thing for
the newspapers and a big thing for
the public when all of them raise the
price and charge what they're worth.
For then publishers won't be under
such obligation to their advertisers
and can begin to print the truth and
give their readers a square deal As
it is, they are little better than ad
vertising handbills and are pub
lished for the benefit of their adver2
Before I get through with this sub
ject I'lrtell you stuff about the news
papers that will startle you.
DEUTSCHLAND IN COLLISION FIVE OF TUG'S
CREW DROWN U-BOAT PUTS BACK
New London, Nov. 16. After leav
ing;her pier, bound for Bremen early
today, the merchant submarine
Deutschiand put back to port after
'colliding with one of the tugs ac
companying her but to the three
Five members of the tug's jcrew,
including Capt. John Curney, are re
ported to have been drowned. .The
tug was the T. A. Scott, Jr.
' At 8:30 this morning the Deutsch
iand was back at her dock. She was
12 miles out of the Race when she
collided with the tug.
Capt. Hinsch of the Eastern For
warding Co.- was aboard the tug and'
was thrown into the water. He was
rescued by members of the Deutsch
The tug T. A. Scott, Jr., attempt
ed to cross the Deutschland's bows
while the Scott and the tug Cassie,"
acting as rear guard for the subma
rine, were steaming along at 12
knots an hour.
There was a splitting crash and a
great hole was torn in the Scott, Jr.'s
side. She broke in two and sank
within three minutes. The crew had
no chance to reach the lifeboats.
Capt Gurney, in the wheelhouse, is
believed to have been crushed to
The four sailors who west down
with Gurney were all below decks,
trapped like rats. They are Engi
neer Wm. A. Caton; Edw. Stone, fire
man; Eugene Duzant, deckhand, and
Clarence Davison, cook.
Since the Deutschiand came back
here under her own steam it is not
beileved she sustained any serious
damage. It is believed she will be
ready for sea again m a few days at

boat" being" involved in the accident
were scouted early this afternoon.
The collision was generally said to
have been due to the Deutschiand
drawing up too close to the tug in
an effort to hear orders that were,
being called through a magaphone
by Capt. Hinsch. c
All lights being but, it was difficult
for the Deutschiand crew to judge
distance and, with the heavy sea run
ning, the boats were thrown violently
together. It was two hours after
Hinsch was drawn from the water
before he was fully revived.
New London, Conn., Nov. 16. A
report Was received here this after
noos from Plum Island that a strange
submarine with a gun mounted on
deck had been sighted toward the
midway Connecticut shore near,
Bartlett's Reef, Long Island Sound.
