You have a splendid opportunity to be the best chief of police in the
vTJnlted States. Hoyne created a situation that made you the logical man
for the job. ,In that situation it was out of the question for a political
chief to be appointed, and when Mayor Thompson met the situation he
met it right He put you on the job and publicly gave you free rein. The
newspapers never mentioned your politics or your religion. They thought
of you only as a policeman.
