churches tell me they are now used
for,socIety purposes, instead of God's
and God is a side issue. Our dollars
are used by criminals for all kinds of
crimes; why continue to- insult God,
with the motto "In God we trust"?
Why not be consistent and have
the motto changed to "In birth con
trol we trust"? i
Europe is doing its share to reduce
population in the old way and hag'
no time for birth, control now, but
after the war is over do not be sur
prised to hear of nations offering
prizes for the largest families of real
men 'and women who believe in God
aa of old.
The white-faced robbers of the na
tion are with us. Can they be de
stroyed before they destroy us?
Moore.
WHEN WE SHOULD FIGHT.
As Is generally the case with men
Jike Jas. Gordon, who imagine that
unless a thing directly concerns them
nad their own personal property they
should take no interest in it, he can
not understand why I am interested
in the Hawaiian islands and the
Philippines.
The only reason I want Uncle Sam
to protect those far eastern posses
sions is because under our governr
ment they are far better off than
they ever were before, as my friend,
Mr. Gordon, can very easily ascertain
if he will simply look up the statis
tics on disease, prosperity and edu
cation in the islands mentioned and
compare them with the conditions
prior Jto their coming under Uncle
Sam's roof.
As is usually the case when a So
cialist (which I think Mr. Gordon is),
argues, he forgets that there Is a
. middleman between the worker and
the capitalist, who also has some
rights that must be protected. I have
no special desire to die in war to pro
tect Rockefeller, Astor or any other
multi-millionaire, but I do demand
protection for whatever little land I
.do own.
I know as well as you do, Gordon,
that our system of government is far
from perfect I know the worker
does not get all' his rights. But, my
dear friend, leaving our country open
to invasion by some relentless foe
who has ;a far lower estimation of
the rights of the worker than al
ready prevails here, is not remedying
the situation, fc it? When you con
sider that the city of Bucharest has
been taxed $400 per capita by the
Germans you can well imagine
what you and I would have to pay in
a similar predicament.
As to your question, "Where is
your patriotism1; 'must they pay you
$50 a month; isn't $13 enough?" I
would say, Mr. Gordon, you do not
get the point of my argument at all.
If this country should be plunged
into war I do not want a cent to
fight My services are free. Why?
Because I do not want to have some
foreign government taxing me $400.
Get the point At the Bame time,
believing as I do, that a fair-size
army always ready to stand the first
blow will tend to make a possible en
emy think a good many times be
fore attacking us, I say, offer $50 per
month instead of $15, so that those
who favor the life of a soldier will
have more than office boy wages.
This will also increase our army,
which will lessen our 'chances of
having to fight at all, and will cost
but a fraction per year of what war
costs per month.
This talk about being ready to
fight "when the war for industrial
freedom is on" is a lot of bunk. The
worker is coming into his own more
and more every day. It is a hard
fight, but they (workers) will win,
and without bloodshed, too.
And, as a conclusion, Gordon, let
me remind you that "you have a free
dom here, imperfect as It Is, that far
surpasses the freedom in any other
country. And you want to be pre
pared Xo fight against any European
or Asiatic tyrant that may try to take
It from you. Don't depend on the
