RELIGIOUS ISSUE FLARES
Jake Loeb's manipulation of the
religious issue in school board poli
tics and the playing of the religious
issue by the Thompson-Lundin or
ganization resulted in a flare-back
from batteries on the Buck and Mer
riam battle lines yesterday.
Twenty-one Protestant ministers
of the 7th. ward issued a joint state
ment asking re-election of Merriam
because of his "experience, courage
and ability."
Rev. J. L. Garrison of Douglas
Park Methodist church pointed to
Jake Loeb as a figure of intolerance.
He said:
"In the 16th century Philip II., king
pf Spain, conceived the idea of rid
ding his realm of all Protestants. Tnt
tortures to which he subjected men,
because of their religious beliefs,
beggar description, and he kept up
his persecutions until 240,000 per
sons had passed under the iron hand
of the inquisition. He succeeded in
starting colonies in the new world,
according to his ideal of progress,
and the backward condition of South
America and the chaos and bedlam
that have reigned in Mexico have one
phrase as their explanation those
countries have for centuries been
held under the bondage of the ideals
of Philip II.
"In Chicago we have in the' presi
dent of the school board a man of
the stripe of Philip II. While civili
zation has advanced too far for such
a man ever to gain a stranglehold on
our civilization, yet in the incomplete
organization of our city life he has a
possibiilty of causing considerable
temporary disturbance. This takes
serious forin when he assails twc
such public servants, as Aldermen
Merriam and Buck. The day is past
when any man can pursue the tac
tics that have been pursued by Pres.
Loeb the past months and retain the
co-operation of forward-looking and
honest-minded people."
