iTiere was such a lonesome, home-1
less ring in the young man's words
that Ann at the unthought of pro-
ceding flushed a bit as she asked him
to stay. Billy accepted the invita
tion with alacrity, did full -justice to
the waffles, and told her she was the
most wonderful cook he had found
since his mother died. He also
evolved a scheme by which Jimmy
could pay for the book by helping
him carry some samples. Jimmy be
ing exceedingly eager for the job, bis
sister consented. Billy won his bet.
A shorter time than the usual in
terval elapsed when Billy again came
to town. He had the unblushing ef
frontery to call on Ann- to ask how
she liked the book. The next day he
came to take Jimmy to the "movies" ;
the following day he came without
any excuse. It was during the third
or fourth visit that Jimmy rushed in
and blurted out: "Say, sis, Al Bar
kum ast me if you bought that book,
'cause he said he bet Mr. Shafer you
wouldn't an "
Billy turned and reached for Jim
my, but he had fled.
"So it was just a bet," she said in
a dull forlorn way, as though sud
denly stricken.
"Yes. But I didn't keep on coming
on a bet," said Billy. "And I didn't
bet I'd marry you."
"It's well you didn't," she said.
Pride had now come to the rescue
and her eyes were flashing. "You
would have lost"
"What makes you think so?" asked
Billy.
"What makes me think so?" she
echoed balnkly. "What do you
mean?"
It seemed that she must have un
derstood what he meant, for the next
instant he was holding her so tightly
she did not even hear Jimmy ex
claim: "Gee!"
Damascus is the oldest city in the
modern world. It is first mentioned
in scripture in connection with Abra
ham (Genesis xiv., 15.)
IDEAL DRESS FOR TRAVELING
By Betty Brown
When it buttons straight from
throat to hem, you may know it is
a new "coat-dress" and, not a long
coat When it is strictly tailored and
not frilled or tucked, you may know
it is designed for street and not home
wear.
The coat-dress is far more juvenile
in effect than the coat-suit of two
pieces. This fact probably accounts
for the immediate hold it has taken
on the fancy of early shoppers.
It makes an ideal 'traveling costume.
