PICTURES OF WRECK THAT KILLED EIGHTEEN
Eighteen persons were killed instantly when a fast freight crashed
into a passenger train, the last car of which was a sleeper, near Alto on a,
Pa. Several freight cars rolled over the embankment. The picture shows
the wreckage.

BELIEVED BERNSTORFF'S SHIP
YIELDED ZIMMERMAN NOTE
New York, March 3. In the ab-
senseof detailed information as to
just how the government obtained
the complete information of German
plotting against the United States,
shipping men here were speculating
today on the possibility of some of
it having been obtained from the lin
er Frederik VIII. was searched at
Halifax.
The baggage of Count von Bern
storff and other members of the Ger
man party was thoroughly examined
at Halifax. The chance that it may
have yielded some assistance to this
government in definitely establish
ing the plot was obviously suggested
by the statement of Sec'y Lansing
that the Zimmerman letter came
into possession of the authorities
"this week." The Frederik VHL
sailed from Halifax, Tuesday.
Knowing the thoroughness with
which the British authorities conduct
their search of vessels, steamship
men expressed the belief that some
code may have been found which
made it possible to decipher the docu
ments in possession of the United
States.

PACIFIC COAST SMELTS FORCE
DOWN NEW YORK PRICES
New York, March 3. Ten tons of
Pacific coast smelts were dumped on
to the market here Friday in a con
tinued attempt to force down the
high price of food. They were sent
into stores in Manhattan and the
Bronx, where they began vying with
the aristocratic Atlantic kind The
western fish are selling at 6 cents a
pound and the Atlantic's offspring
are trying to bring 16 cents for the
same 16 ounce,
