A WISE PATRIOT Mr. Schwab
of Bethlehem Steel Co. announced
that, in case of war, his great plant
would be at the service of the gov
eminent
Hurrah! There's patriotism for
you ! There's the true spirit of Amer
icanism r Run the stars and stripes
up to the top of Bethlehem's tallest
smokestack! Three cheers for
Schwab!
Later: Bethlehem Steel Co. has
just submitted bids for casings for
the navy for $42,000,000. Navy ex
perts say that .the government could
make these casings for $18,000,000,
Schwab thus grabbing for only $24,
000,000 profit on this job.
Hur well, patriotism's one thing
and profit's another. Three cheers
for well, come 'to think about it, the
party engaged in running up -nags
might use the skull and cross-bones
on Bethlehem's smokestack -atore-said.
It is a wise patriot who knows his
own flag.
HERE'S THE TICKET! Congress
knows exactly what to do about the
food shortage. Trust those deep
reasoners and thoughtful statesmen
to meet such an emergency, every
time.
Some folk think there should be
a better distribution of food supplies,
some think the speculators siiould be
routed and the monopolies broken
upL
The statesmen know better.
What is really wanted to do the
trick and make all things right with
us is an investigation.
You bet. With a report handed
down in 1919 and printed in 11 nice
volumes, to be had of your congress-'
man.
Here, indeed, is the real thing at
last The people that are rioting for
food say they are hungry. Well, rats
and mice eat books and seem to find
them a tasty and attractive diet Why
should not human beings?
There must be nutriment in paper
and bindings. At least as much nu
triment as in some of the economy
bills of fare that various highbrows
are now recommending to the poor.
SHORT ONES.
No, Hortense, when congress
passes "pork" bills it is not reducing
the high cost of living.
Mexicans may have got over the
notion that Texas wouldn't let them
lick the United States, since Calla
way has been callawaying.
lowan has discovered how to plant
potato peelings and make them
grow. But when we have to eat po
tato peelings, how are we going to
raise 'em then?
The increases in price of gasoline
are due to decreases in the supply.
Standard Oil Co. of Indiana made 100
per cent profit in 1916 on its $30,-
000,000 capitalization.
Without free speech no search for
truth is possible; without free speech
no discovery of truth is useful; with
out free -speech progress is checked
and the nations no longer march for
ward toward the nobler life which
the future holds for men. Better a
thousandfold .abuse of free speech
than denial of free speech. The abuse
dies in a day, but the denial slays the
life of a people and entombs the hope
of the race Brandlaugh.
