FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION It
is too bad that we common people
are such meek slaves that we allow
a handful of the puritan church
trust to come before our state law
makers and induce them "in the
name of reform" to rob us of our
freedom of speech and expression.
These reformers don't dare show
up in summer at the bathing beaches
and tell people what to wear, be
cause they are afraid they would be
lynched. But in our poor man's the
ater they come with all the gall and
boldness of a tyrannical czar and
dictate just what the masses shall
see, hear and what jokes shall be
cracked.
All individuality is crushed, smoth
ered and threatened with censorship
of fine, jail or prison. Still they
hypocritically call this a free coun
try and expect patriots to come on
the run to defend such censorship.
Patriotism is dying fast because of
unjust regulations.
Anybody who destroys patriotism
is guilty of high treason and should
be shot. Tired workers on low wages
need fun, the tonics of barroom
stories, the expression of comedian
actors and actresses, however free,
but tyrannical reformers are now
taking the last remnant of liberty
away from the "dear people."
They see "harm" in everything.
Puritanism is in the saddle and
prudes are in their glory, although
the freedom of expression guaran
teed by our constitution is being
taken away.
There is not one of these violators
of the people's rights who belong to
the army, navy, nat'l guard or Red
Cross, yet they expect to be defend
ed by patriotic citizens in times of
war after thev have killed the na-
triotic spirits with their damnable
regulations that violate our consti
tution. Oh, for a new race of free men,
who will slaughter those who take
our liberties frbm us. Our legislators
should not be given office if they are
church members, because the church
demands obedience and slavery. A
legislator should not hold office until -he
has traveled around the world
and seen all countries, until he has
sinned, so that he acquires that pulse
for humanity that he gets only from
suffering and woe.
These legislators should be illegi
timate like Christ, Booker T. Wash
ington, Abraham Lincoln's grand
parent, Victor Hugo and others who
understood the human soul, its woes,
joys, pleasures and expressions.
Too many inexperienced kids, with
no broad iews and afflicted with in
tolerance, are creeping into the legis
latures to do the bid and call of the
charity and church trusts.
Remember Patrick Henry, who
said: "Give me liberty or give me
death"? Allen Steven.
TO SINGLE TAXER. In the issue
of The Day Book March 16 there ap
peared an article in The Public
Forum signed by Single Taxer. The
article scorched burlesque shows. I
-should like to ask the writer his rea
son for pointing out a negro of 18 or
20 years of age who attended the
same burlesque show and acted in an
objectionable way?
Mr, Single Taxer, if an Irish, Jew
ish or Polish fellow had acted in the
same way, would you have mention
ed the same in the columns of The
Day Book? I do not think that you 4k
should. In my opinion your arti.de
disgraces Single Tax and its "revered
founder, Henry George, and brands
you as a narrow-minded, prejudiced
observer.
Now, no hard feelings, Mr. Citi
zen. We do not all act alike, think
alike, etc. I should like to have and
would appreciate a reply. Lordorv
Owens,
