COCHRAN TO THOMPSON
THE NEWSCHOOL BOARD!
WM. HALE THOMPSON,
MAYOR OF CHICAGO
Now's YOUR chance to do something worth while for the public
schools. You can take that religious scrap by the tail and throw it over the
back fence like you would any other dead rat. And you can tie a can to;
Jake Loeb and throw him over, too.
As a political issue it's a dead one. We're in a real war now and
haven't time to monkey with phoney wars. Those very Catholics are
marching up to the cap'tain's office now and enlisting under the stars and
stripes just as fast as patriots who belong to other churches.
When Uncle Sam wants a red-blooded fighting man who is willing to
sacrifice his life for his country, Uncle Sam doesn't ask him what church
he belongs to. Neither did our revolutionary forefathers refuse to let
Charles Carroll of Carrol Iton risk his neck by signing the declaration
because Carroll happened to be a Catholic.
We're all Americans now, ready to do our part in the war between
autocracy and democracy and it's no time for petty squabbling amongst
ourselves. Certainly it's no time for peanut politics.
As mayor of Chicago it's up to YOU to set our city house in order.
Let's wipe out the past and start anew. Let's get our educational system
on straight and have a school board that will deserve the confidence and
command the respect of all patriotic American men, women and children.
Put a stop to the disgraceful scrapping in a political school board.
Get school board members who will have ALL teachers, ALL pupils and
ALL parents pulling together for the good of Chicago, of our public schools
and of our common country.
Put an end to the shameful politics in the school board. Throw Jake
Loeb onto the scrap heap of oblivion, and with him the policy that means
persecution of patriotic American citizens because they exercise their con
stitutional right to follow the dictates of their own conscience when they
When the American people are aroused and fighting for a cause that
h as big as the entire human family, it's no time for them to be fighting like
cats and dogs among themselves, over pin pricks and flea bites.
Say, Bill, I'll bet there' is no more genuinely patriotic body of citizens
in town right now than the teachers in our public schools. I'll bet no two
women in town would go farther for Uncle Sam than Ida L. Fursman and
Margaret Haley. J'l bet that no 68 citizens in town will go farther than
the 68 teachers who were fired-by Jake Loeb and his cowardly pack on the
old school board.
Anyhow, let's can that nasty scrap. Give the boys and eirls in th
