Sid Hatch, Chicago's star long dis tance runner, has gone to Boston, where he will compete in the Bos ton marathon Thursday. CUBS NOT POINTED FOR HIGH PLACE MANAGER KNOWS IT By Mark Shields Now that they have lost three games in a row, the Cub athletes need not be surprised if the hammers f are unsheathed and some fans and experts diagram to them just how punk they are. AH of which will be no news to Manager Mitchell and thoso who. follow the team closely. Mitchell has claimed no pennant winner. He has admitted that he has a large task ahead and the top of the second division will be honor enough to content him. A place in the first section would stamp the North Side pilpt as a strategist of the first water. Except in one or two individual cases the Cubs in the last three games all defeats have been no worse than when they opened the season with a trio of wins over the Pirates. The difference has been in the pitching, upon which hangs the position of the club at the end of the campaign. v In the first three games Vaughn, Douglass and Reuther were exceSent twirlers, holding the enemy to a pau city of hits and runs. In the succeed ing three games the hurling was not quite so good, though Hendrix was competent enough to win with most ball teams back of him. As composed at present, the Cubs will not score many runs per ball game. There are a few men who will hit vigorously, but the team batting average is apt to be a lowly thing at the final compiling of averages. Therefore, the pitchers must pause the enemy and must have back of (ft them perfect fielding support and clear thinking. In no other way can even a modicum of success be looked for.
