In the meantime, however, the
Balboa Co. has discovered another
wonder child in Gloria Joy, and is
going right ahead making "Mary
Sunshine" films "till the cows come
home," also, with Little Gloria dis
pensing the sunshine. Here's what
H. M. Horkheimer, president of the
Balboa Co., says about it:
" 'Little Mary Sunshine' is a brand
FASHION RESPONDS
APPEARS IN
BY BETTY BROWN.
Fashions have responded almost
instantly to the declaratibn of war.
Shops are full of dainty things for
women to wear that will express the
patriotism of the wearer. The red,
while and blue dominates hats, veils,
stockings, gloves and gowns. The
Stars and Stripes have been woven
mto the fabric of the new spring
fashions.
From top to toe, Milady of Fashion
can find something nowadays to ex
press her patriotism in her dress.
The Knox company displays a new
veil with the American eagle at the
top, to be draped over the hat, and
with three American flags embroid
ered into the mesh. The flags, are
embroidered into the lower portion
of the veil, which is waist length.
The Franklin-Simon Co. is show
ing new white silk stockings, with a
dainty silk flag women into the fab
rics and showing at the ankle.
New gloves, with the flag design
woven into the back, in place of the
usual row of black stitching, are also
ready.
Military coats, approximating the
alive drab of the army in color, are
on exhicition.
Yet it is a little too soon to discover,
any patriotic resolve to dress with
greater economy. The shops at the
upper end of the district are as re
splendent as ever, and conceal in
their pearl and gray and white enam
eled fixtures such an array of rich
silk coats and gowns of filmiest Geor-
name duly patented by my company.
No other concern has the right to
produce photoplays under that title.
The fact that Douglas is featuring
the child who was the original Sun
shine star makes no difference. We
will prevent by federal injunction the
exhibition of any 'Little Mary Sun
shine' photoplay not manufactured
by ourselves."

Cinderella.
The use of heavy silk so richly bro
caded with threads of silver or gold
as to render the material almost like
metal cloth has resulted in a. new
short but richer close-fitting straight
lined skirt, hung in the back with a
flat narrow train, hardly more than a
great broad sash, or the whole skirt
is stiffly draped, with a" little fullness
at the back and sides, but kept nar
row around the bottom. This whole
question of skirts, by the way, prom
ises to be interesting pretty soon.
There is a suspicious hint of tight
ness and a decided line of fullness at
the knees or higher up, which leaves
one wondering what the new line will
be.
The length of skirts stays about
the same, qr perhaps creeps just an
inch in the general direction of shoe
tops. Rest assured they do not seem
to go far below that, and the observ
er along the avenue counts herself
fortunate indeed if most of them
reach that far.
Many women seem to imagine
fashion demands that they leave an
ugly little strip of "neutral territory"
below the hem of the skirt and above
the top of the boot.
After a riotous wandering in the
field of color, shoes have managed to
come as near to finding a stopping
place at the new dark shades of
brown as anywhere. Lighter shades
of brown also are popular, and
