MAYOR THOMPSONS STAND
Attitude On tho Vaccination Qtiostlon
Tlilnks Jaw a Good One
Mayor Thompsons attitude In the
vaccination question Is that he will
stand firm In the enforcement of the
board of healths mandate of which
body he Is the chairman When seen
his morning by a representative of the
News Mayor Thompson stated that
the follQwIn Interylaw vhlch he gave
cuhlalltlnl4t tlled rl1jIl st
lion In the matter
I shall do all In my power to enforce
the law to the letter In regard to the
school board I am satisfied that the
teachers will be liable to prosecution
nnd punishment It they violate tho law
by admitting children who have not
been vaccinated but I believe In going
light to the head of the matter and
prosecuting those members of the
tchool board who voted to defy the
board of health Those are the men
who are most responsible but as 1 un
derstand It their action does not excuse
the teachers
I am a linn believer In vaccination
continued the mayor The medical
fraternity Is practically agreed upon
this point and common sense and the
experience we have had in thl city aro
all on that side I would dislike very
much to think that any actUm on my
part or any failure to act was ieaponsl
We for the death of any person or re
sponsible for any one being dlaflguretl
for life Hut It Is not a question of
what I think on the subject of vaccina
tion It Is a question of whether or not
the law Is to be defied I think the law
is a good one and M long as It Is on
the statute woks It should be obeyed
If It Is a bad law and If the people are
opposed to It It should be repealed by
the legislature
In regard to the effect this agitation
III liable to have on the city and tho
State the mayor sold I am wrry It
has occurred It Is certain to have a
bed effect We can easily stamp out
this disease and HH I understand It the
authorities have it now under pretty
complete control but If the law h re
pealed nnd the bars are let down I nm
afraid our city and our State will suffer
in a business way It seems to me to
be the duty of everybody to obey tho
laws and the rules of the board of
health nnd stamp out this smallpox
with as little fuss as poarlble If other
oUltq and other States should quaran
tine against us It would lie a serious

Ah a I have sighed to rest me
The immortal Verdi is n more
When this JntelllgfiHM is flashed over
the world through thousands of minds
will run the Immortal song from which
the above strain Is taken the Ah
Che La Morte from the prison ecene In
I Trovatore I Is perhaps not say
Ing to much to say that no song that
was ever rendered In opera has been
oftener sungor more generally admired
than this selection How many times
the opera of I Trovatort has been
sung sines It wan written perhaps no
on could say but that number would
be a mere tithe of th times It hi been
rendered on the concert platform and
tn parlors and drawing rooms Verdis
faitio as a composer might very well
rest upon I Trovatore alone but his
extraordinary wealth of musical at

that he wrote many oilier operas al

THE PASSINO VERDI OF THE MORTAL
To tho Editor
Yes lo me rest for my soul Is
weary S sings the Imprisoned gypsy
In II Trovatore S sang the Immor
tal soul In Its earthly prison And at
last the wonderful harp Is hushed to
mortals the fingers that with a rnnglo
pen made their melodies audible to 1
char world for nearly eighty years
are still and Paradise greets the re
turn of Its Trovat rc after his brief
pilgrimage to earth And ret not The
divine soul I not even hushed to mor
tali Verdi Is not even In th ordinary
MOM dead to the millions who love
him only to the few fortunate ones who
enjoyed his actual bodily presence 1
there any change The great dlvlni
portion of the man his wonderful scum
of melody is even today vibrating un
in every part of the globe The Verdi
I learned to love 1 intensely when a
mere boy Is still young and fair pul
sating with life right here with me in
the person of his I Trovatore L
Travlata and his immortal Aids
Now as then I can wander to the silent
nook book in hand and he sings for
me playing upon the sympathetic
chords of my emotion until my eyes
are moistened my heart throbbing
warmly In unison with his story of
hop Joy or sorrow M he slugs on
page after 118 from the first awaken
ng of love to the departure of the soul
the end of the book for the present
True I never finished the book without
a mental visit to the far away minstrel
In sunny Jay a mental grateful
look as It were Into the face of him
who had touched the strings and set
them Into such vibration that I and all
the world might hear I still do so
and always will what matters It that
now I see a vault a monumentIn
place of a palace and a garden To time
mental vision both are alike accessible
to me ua mortal In the flesh both would I
nave been alike Inaccessible for were
I there I never would have dared to I
Intrude upon his presence In either S
who is dead to me7 Not the Verdi that
I have known he lives even o earth
and like a dear bosom friend still sings
to me In m room In the

Mr Towne spoke In full and resonant

In opening his address Mr Towne re

the granting of independence to the

While discussing events which led i

A CHANGE OF TONI
Mr Towne declared that upon the sr

between the United States officials and
