A War Anecdote. Colonel Von Borcke,
who is writing for Blackwood the story of
his adventures as aid to the rebel General
Stuart, daring the war. tells the following
story, which being at hVs own expense, is
probably true :
One of the Yankee officers, who, as I was
later informed, was the Colonel of a regi
ment that effected its escape from Harper's
Ferry, had attracted my attention by his
gallantry and the excellent dispositions he
made ol his troops. 1 saw him again gal
loping very near us ou a handsome gray
horse, quickly discovering our weak points,
and pobting and instructing his me accord
ingly. Alter having left him undisturbed
for 6omo time, I thought it necessary to put
a stop to his proceedings, and selecting a
couple of my infantrymen, who had been
pointed out to me as the best shots, I made
across the open space in front of our lines
directly toward him. Having arrived with
in reasonable distance, I ordered my sharp
ehooters to fire at the daring Colonel, who
was moving along at an easy gallop, with
out having paid me the slightest attention.
After Bevcral bullets had whistled quite
close to him, he suddenly halted, and turn
ing around, advanced a tew steps and made
mo a military salute in the most graceful
manner possible. Then calling out to one
of his men to hand him a carbine, he raised
the weapon, took a deliberate aim at me,
and 6ent his ball so close to my head that
I thought it had carried away a lock of my
hair. 1 saluted him now on my part, and
wheeling round quietiv, both of us rode
back to our rcspectivo fines.
Destitction in Alabama. The Hunts
ville Independent, of the 17th, says :
Hon. M. H. Cruikshank, of Talladega,
Commissioner appointed by the Governor
to aid in the distribution of supplies to the
destitute, is at present in our city. He in
forms us that 5,000 rations daily will be
sent to our city for distribution to the des
titute in this District, composed of the coun
ties of JIadison, Jackson, .Marshall, Blount,
Cherokee, DeKalb, Limestone, Lauderdale,
Lawrence, Franklin, Morgan, Marion,
"Winston, by persons appointed for that pur
pose in each county.
There is much destitution in North Ala
bama, and we are glad to see that the Gov
rtment has shown a disposition to relieve
the wants of tho poor. We hope the sup
plies will be properly distributed, and care
taken that no one not entitled shall receive
them. We understand that supplies have
not yet reached here, but will in a short
time, as they have been shipped from Nash
ville. Notice will be given to the Probate
judges of each county, when they can send
for them.
A N egro Duel. If any body doubts the
capacity of the negro, tho following para-p-raDh
will dissipate his skepticism, espe
cially if he be a believer in the code of
chivalry :
An "affair of honor" came off Saturday
at Hutchinson's Island, near Savannah, be
tween knights of the cleaver. Ono negro
batcher insulted another, when a challenge
followed. The principals, with seconds,
repaired to Hutchinson's Island, when they
blared away at each other, and succeeded
in wounding one ot the seconds, out es
caped without any bodily injury to them
selves. This occurrence satisfied the woun
ded honor of tho colored gemmcn, and the
whole party made friends. After drinking
two bottles of whisky, and playing several
games of ''seven up" they returned to the
city, and were arrested at the market Sat
urday evening by a file of soldiers, and con
fined in tho barracks. Verily, these are
queer times wo live in.

At the marriage, in Paris, of the Princess

Soldiers Look at This. It ma not gen
erally be known that the War Department
never gives a copy of a discharge to a sol
dier who has lost or sold the original docu
ment. Therefore, it becomes necessary to
preserve papers of so much value, and as a
remedy in case the should be lost, we sug
gest to the soldier tho propriety of having
them properly recorded at the County
ClerkVoffice, so that copies can be obtained
certified to by the Clerk, by which the sol
dier may realize bounties, land grants or
any other privileges that Congress may
enact. Get your discharges recorded imme
diately ; it will save you trouble should you
lose the original.
