One of the wonders of the axe, a new in vention, Is about to bo patented by a Bridge port man. It U calied "the life-saving engine pilot." It is certainly a remarkablo 'w'hfa', By its application to locomotives the danger of run-over accidents is forever ended, 1b appliance is exceedingly ample, and that no man has ever thought of its practical appli cation before, in this ago of Yankee inven tion, is remarkable. The track-walker, man, woman, or child, is now comparatively safe, as far as an cxttcss train is concerned, for by no possible chance can a locomotive under full career harm a hair of their heads. Mr. Itosenfelt, the inventor, says that the idea of such an appliance first occurred to him by seeing tho mail agents on the postal can grab the mail bags with tho appliance at tached to tho side of the car. lie thought 'bat if a mail Lag could be caught by an iron fork and iprinjr without damage, why rould not a man bo handled by making the cushions so soft that his person could not be injured! He las experimented for some time, catching chickens and dogs to begin with. He finally perfected his invention suf ficiently to pick up his children without harm, and lastly, in testing his invention, it has been attached to a locomotive, and, while running at tho rate of forty-five miles an hour, it has picked np Mr. Bosenfelt himself, and landed him upon the spring mattress without harm. The life-saving pilot resembles an enormous open-work funnel. Tho mouth opens wids enough to cover the rails. Light steel strips converge toward the entrance of a canvas hhoot These fclats ore delicately balanced and backed up with a number of buoyant springs. The persons to be picked up will be scooped, so to speak, into this airy funnel with such a delicate, easy motion as to pre vent any concussion. Tho momentum of the engine will carry tho man, woman, or child up over tho engino through the canvasi shoot and pass him or her into a spring mat tress m the first passenger car. The con ductor, it is to bo supposed, will collect fare, and as eople will be picked up in this way between stations, they will be expected to be provided with mileage tickets. A colored porter will always be found waiting at the opening of the shoot with a whisk broom and a pitcher of icewatcr. Tho cow-catcher w ill have to go. They are of no f urtiior use. This new invention will not catch cons, as t hoy are, as a rule, too bulky, and would clog up the shoot Itii only intended for absent-minded pedestrians. J. S. She. bat in'tho depot and fondled a dude dog, whilo tho nurse-girl carried a little human member of the family. The dude, dog's hair was banged over its forehead and all it wanted was a pair of knee-breechet and a buttcr-ci ncker hat to be mistaken foi a lawn-tennis player looking for some girls tc have a game. Its tail was shaved off almost up to tho terminus, where there was a min iature duster that gave it tLo appearance ol u putty-blower with a feather stuck in the end. Tile handsome clerk opened tho window with a bang, und the fashionably dressed lady turned to purcboM her ticket, leaving the dog on tho floor. Tw o horny-banded us of toil entered the waiting room tearing a trunk tho size of a canal boat They evidontly mistook the dudo dog for a door-mat, for thoy placed th trunk on its outer edge, A man who rtood beside the lady at Mm window remarked: "JJo liuvins, Ol do bo thinkin' that wan at jer family'd in throuble!" She thought ho refei rod to the baby and took no notice of the remark. Suddenly there was a scream from tho nurse-girl. She let the baby fall and hurried to tho rescue. Tho lady turned and took in the situation aVe glance. Then sho swooned. She kept on f aluting up to the time of the arrival of the train, and tlien revivol long enough to berate the nurss for her care!esjiejn. When they took the dog from under the trunk the pool little fellow looked for all tho world like a Surrogate's seal, and his tail wasn't fat enough for a paper-cutter. The station hands handed the forgotten baby into the train just as the latter was moing off, and it waj clapped down on a seat and Kanked until it looked like the Fourth of July. Graded Snakes. "Don't j on Lolieve it I'll bet it was over six feet!" exclaimed tho man from Shouse- town. The editor wiote 'four mash" on a slip and tUM'nsd attention. "It's n fact. Inin'tlyig. It wouldn't lie away from tho truth if I slid seven feet," coi.tinued tho stranger, excitedly. "Itje" was briefly jotted down without a word of comment. "Ten feet! ten feet I Ycu wooden-headed iiik-potl There, you going to believo thatr "Certainly," replied the editor as he scratched off "bourbon." "Here, my friend, Is a snake card. You will notico under five feet, they are lager beer snakes. By tho foot they go from 'sour mash,' 'old rye, and 'bourbon' up to Diamond alley whisky. That's the highest grade and Is only used for sea serpents. Good day." Yost first came to Wichita : I thought I would just wait and let .some others try. It Is as much out of place to try to nse the old style of SDectacles here In Kansas as It would be to try to farm with the old style of isrming tools, ana, sir, i uon nesiiste to say that the man that wont go to Dr. Yoit and be fitted with pair ol his improved lenses ought to have his self-binder and Imoroved Dlows taken from him, and be compelled to cut his grain with the old hand sickle and plow with the wocden-mouldboard Dlow." it is Just as Important to nse improved lenses properly fitted.
