Gold of tlie Orchard.
You are certnluly entitled to Iookj
through that wire fence nud sec oll thatj
constitutes U? orange orchard. Tberej
nre 200 round bended trees, about
twelve feet In diameter. The fruit
looks Immensely ns If It had been arti?
ficially put lu place. Really those
would pass for 200 Christmas trees.
Does nature do tills sort of work any?
where else? You forget the cherry trees
hi your northern orchard. You hnve be?
come so familiar with the scarlet glob?
ules thnt hang nil over those trees,
with orioles and robins shouting np-,
provnl, and tanngers with Indigo birds
sitting In the apple tree overhead, thnt
you cannot fully see and nppreclnto the
chnrm. Rut you certainly have not for?
gotten the glory of a Mclntosh red ap-,
pie tree in October or Indeed a wholei
orchard of ripe Northern Spies, Spltzon
burgs and Kings. Yet the orange has a
glory nil its own. it Is the gold of the
orchard. Yon thought the trees grew In
groves, "but here they nre In long. reg-j
nlnr rows." Thnt was n word borrow?
ed from the wild oranges that In Spnn
iBh days enme up where (hey might
nnd were seldom transplanted. They,
grew us those wild persimmons grow
St the edge of the orchard or as pines
nnd maples grow. Rut your modern
orange trees nre grown lu long rows to
be cultivated with plows nnd horses
The real orange tree should stand
nhout twenty-five nr thirty feet high,
with n trunk of five or six Inches. Its
foliage Is dense nnd a rich green, ft Is
a grand tree to sit beneath at midday
nnd drink the juices of the fruit Instead
of water? It Is distilled perfectly. But
these trees nre round nnd low bended,
nnd one must stoap to get bencntb
thoni. They are made of the grafter
shoots thnt came up around the oirl
trees after the freeze. They are raoro
convenient to spray, to protect from
the blizzard, while the fruit Is mnw
easily gathered. Yon can walk nil
ohont that orchard nnd reach hnlf th?
fruit without n ladder. It In n good Il?
lustration of how good sometimes
comes nut of evil.
"Different shapes!" -To he butt-.
There nre quite ns many varieties of
orange* In this orchard ns there nre of
npples or plums In most of your north?
ern orchards llftcen or twenty, at
least. The grower knows them nil by
nnme nnd can tell them nil by the
shape nnd the quality. He does not ro
nt random nnd pick any flue big ornngo
for his own eating, hut lie takes ht#
selection -the King, or the ITomosnr.n,
or the Jaffa, or the Ruby, or Parson
Brown, or Satsnmn. or posslbry tha
tangerine. He nils his pocket with se-j
lected varieties and then goes to thnti
pine grove over there and peels them,
ns he lunches. It Is very much ns w?j
do with our pippins, nnd Swnnrs, an

TONS OF GOLD TREASURE.

It has never been told how vast was

tntried away only a small part of the
treasures looted at Mexico, yet wore ho
loaded down with stolen gold that
when they fell from the causeway Into,,
the lake in the memorable retreat from
Mexico they sank and drowned ns
weighted with plummets of lend; also
we read how Pizarro exacted ns a trib?
ute for the liberation of Ihe Tuen Ata
hulpn gold that tilled to the depth of
several feel a room seventeen feet, wide
by twenty-two feet long and thnt wns
valued lit LoOO.OOO pesos d'or, the
equivalent of nearly $l?,500 of our

transfer the treasure from the cap?

tons of silver, besides eighty pounds of
virgin gold, thirteen chests of pieces of
