UPWARD MOVEMENT
RECEIVES A CHECK.
WHEAT STARTED OFF LIKE A
SURE WINNER.
Other Grains Also Declined and
the Close of the Day Was
Largely Lower in Price.
Office rtepuMlc.
Thursday. Sept. 2. l?i.
To-day was one of dlsastrlous reactions,
all t!i3 speculative KTaln markets of the
country taJilnp a bad turn and logins' more
thin they had been able to fral" In the
last twenty-four hours. The channe of
front was severely felt here and partic
ularly In the case of wheat, which has been
xcry Btror.s and bullish and the chief sup
port of tho cheaper j-xalns. Whllo the col
lapse of the bull movement was unexpected
and could not be explained by the lone?.
who were completely at sea for a cause,
specially as the bulit of the neu-s, outside
of local condition", waa decidedly bullish.
and In view of tho fact that for nearly a
week the lor.RS have met with almost un
interrupted succc". the blow was serious
ly ft It by one and all The coarser (,-ratns,
which ham been almost entirely got envd
by the actions of the liner grain, naturally
followed wheat on Its downward coutse.
though the break In values was not near
so serious, the former going off over "c
from tho top. while the Litter lost but 'e
to ehO for the da-., and oats wre only 'c
lower. The break treated the j-reatest kind
of excitement on 'change, and the scene in
the pit was one that is seldom witnessed,
the declines being so heavy and swift as
to completely deracralire traders and create
a FCinlpanlc on the floor.
Tldngs never looked so bright and premis
ing, in a speculative wa. as they did at
tho opening of tho wheat market this
morning, and those traders who have been
predicting IiOc wheat, were highly elated.
Tho market started off like a sure winner.
Tho feeling was Intensely bullish, owing to
the treat strength shown yesterday, late
in tho day, and the strong character of
the news at hand. The blow, when it fell,
therefore, was felt more seriously than
otherwise would have bc-n the case. But
it is alwajs tho unexpected that happens,
and particularly in ventures of a tpecula
tfve nature Aside from local coniitlons.
Including receipts, shipment.-, and stocks,
which were bearish, the earl intelligence
was in the main favorable to tho bull
cause, and the longs looked forward to a
strong and higher market, wrnie with the
view of unloading on the first hari spot and
others to add to their lon,r line;., wnen the
opportunltv offered. The arrivals here were

there were the cables, which noted better
responses abroad than since the upward
movement of prices on this side j
started. Liverpool was s4d higher. Lon

country markets were jH to lie

more rain had fallen, and at .Minneapolis

and the former market le higher. Clikauo
and Xiw York were both strong at ad
vances. ar;d the Cincinnati Price Current
said that all seeding was backward east
the Mls--!--sijipi. though that was more
than oflset by that in the West.
Tho opening was srotnt at mc advance
since last night, and the lirst trades were at
79v,tj-i. tht hi"i st price for Die on the
irop. This was the hard spot looked for by
ilie longs and proved so tempting that there
was an immediate ru-h to fell and prices'

oiling prcsi.re becoming stronger as the
