New York. Oct. 12. After being; a little
Irregular at the openlrar, American stocks
In London took the cue from New York
and closed firm at the best of the day.
Consols were practically unchanged, but
the general market, after being heavy,
closed strong. Money wm harder In Ber
lin, but trading on tbe Boerso was active
and the tone strong. Exchange was unal
tered In Paris or Berlin, and the I'arls
- Bourse was rather heavy. One million In
gold was withdrawn from the Bank of Eng
land for New York by Lnz.inl Freres. who
expect to Import more and are wlthdarw
lng an equal quantity from Paris. The
Chinese news indicates considerable dis
turbance In the South.
Contrary to generally formed expectations
the wboio market showed strength coon
after the opening and maintained It Tory
well. In spite of profit-Uklng later In
the day. Northern Paciiic advanced on buy
ing, eaid to be lor Morgan Interests, and
purchases of some 15,tMu shares for Lon
don stimulated the general Ibt. These lat
ter would have been larger but for de
lay In the cables. The railroad list was
generally firm, with special strength In
Baltimore and Ohio, Union l'.iciric, Burling
ton and granger stocks. The Steel stocks
ere strong on tho report that railroad com
panies were placing orders for steel rails
at the present price of JJfl per ton. PennsI
Tania has placed an order for 133,000 tons,
divided among Federal Steel, Pennsjlva
Ela Iron, Carnegie and National Steel.
People's Gas was strong, apparently on
manipulation from Chicago. It seemed to
be rather at tbe mercy of the bear cliques
who have bought and sold it since It stood
at par, and who get the credit in the room

often that, with a continual stream of in-
i unctions staring it in the face, the mar
:et does not believe in a bcttlement.
The close was firm, and If not quite at the
best, the advance on the day was very well
maintained. The market seemed to have
been rather recklessiv ovcr;olil In the re
cent past, particularly In Northern Pacitlc
and People's Gas. The nrinclnal support
came from short Interests, hut there was

well. The P,uropean markets take a tran-
qull Tiew of the Chinese situation, although
a substantial recoTerj- in British consols
and French rentes would be reassuring.
The result of the British election is practi
cally assured, and Is a factor making rather
for tbe bull side. It insures, at any rate.
