The drinking- water at two Belleville schools and five other public wells has U-n condemned as unfit to drink. In a report by JJoctor Edward Bartow of the University of Illinois, to whom was sub-mlu-a samples from various public wells at Belleville by Doctor A. L. Reuss. the y ihsh-:an of Belleville, acting at the equest of Mayor Fred J. Kern. As it result of this report, the City Councii last night Instructed the Belleville Hoard of Health to condemn the wells In which water was reported to be unfit for Th well.. at the Franklin an-1 Uncoln schtaoit were condemned, while at several of the other fcchools an admonition is mad- to carefully watch the water. The public wells condemned are known ns follows: Forcade's. on South Illinois street; the Thomas well, the North High stret well, the sheske well and tho Mar ket Square well. Belleville receives Its water supply from what are known as das?p wells. Thesa wells are scv-ral hundreal feet deep and go throueh a strata of limestone tapping a subterranean stream. This water Is pumped into reservoir, and from the reser voirs through the cltv. In many parts of the elty the old-fashioned cistern or shallow well is still In use an J in alrMst every schoolyard there Is one of these shallow well". They arc also locatasl on streets in front of saloons and mercantile establishments. Recently complaints have been made to Major Kern to the elTect that the water in sevetal of the wells about town, es-peciallv- at the schools, was contamlnatoal.
