Tho train for Cleveland was pulling out and had gained considerable head way when there camo a whizz and the sound of splitting wind as a man with a tall silk lint crushed dow n on his ears dashed through the gato. Ho carried two big valises, but thoy were apparently as light as feathers, for tnev did not interfere with his mad rush after that train. He fairly flew along tho platform, and tho brakeman on tho car was so busy looking at a girl in tho window of the National hotel that ho did not seo him. The crowd yelled and whooped. "Got there, old manl" "Pull for it hard I" "You'll make it if you don't fall dead," and ahundred such aggravating remarks. The man made an heroic ollbrt, but ho didn't havo tho legs, and the brakeman didn't see him thus ho missed tho train. He came slowly back to tho gate, put down his grips, mopped his faco, and remarked : ''Well, I'll bo Mowed." Ho didn't say Mowed, but lot it go at that. "Had a lively run," suggested a meek and lowly gentleman. "Rather. Just my luck, though, to miss that train. Wliv, I wouldn't nave missed that train for $50." "Where wero you going?" once moro asked tho gentleman with the ginger colored whiskers. "Lafayotte. And I have an important engagement there tonight." "well, you can keep it." "Hey?" "Tho train you were chasing goes to Cleveland. Tho Lafayette train don't start for eight minutes yet. There it stands." Tho drummer didn't say a word. He gathered his grips and climbed aboard the car. while tno faintest bit of a smile hovered about tho meek and lowly gateman'8 chops. NO CUHK NO l'AY. W. A. Hyde, M.
