Omce Main Street, One Poor East of Mesa City Bank.
Tho Consolidated is tho largest of tho great canals of
tho south side. The system now consists of 40 miles of main
canal; 75 miles of main laterals and 150 miles of smaller
laterals so distributed that 100,000 acres of land may be
irrigated.
Besides this great system tho following canals with
underlying territory must bo considered: Tho Highland
canal, 20 miles, 15,000 acres; tho Mesa canal, 10 miles, 20,
000 acres; tho Utah, 10 miies, 20,000 acres; tho Tempe, 15
miles, 30,000.
The entire region about Mesa derives its lifo from these
systems which aro also contributory in tho highest de
gree to tho agricultural prosperity of the country around
Tempe.
Thore is a rapidly spreading belief that that part of tho
valley in which these two flourishing towns aro located is
tho garden spot of Arizona and developments justify tho
growing belief.
It is not improper in this connection to describe briefly
the grounds upon which this beliof is based and the natural
reasons why it is so.
Tho country about Mesa will probably within tho next
ten years enjoy tho widely circulated distinction of being tho
most productive fruit-growing region in the United States
as it is now known to be the chief fruit bolt of tho valley.
It differs sufficiently in altitude from tho rest of the
valle' to insure semi-tropical fruits against dangor from
frost always imminent in the most favored regions of Cali
fornia. .
Tlie altitude is 81.G feet higher than Tempe and 172
feet above Phoenix, rendering it somewhat cooler than eithor
placo in summer and slightly warmer in winter.
Vineyards dot tho country in evory direction and hun
dreds of broad acres aro sot to oranges, almonds, dates, etc.
Mesa City, tho center of this lovely region, is an ideal village
of 1200 people, situated G.8 miles east of Tempo and about
17 miles from Phoenix.

The business and commercial interests include one
bank, seven general merchandise stores, ono hardware store,
two blacksmith shops, one lumber yard and two saloons.
The buildings aro of a good character and become
moro pretentions yearly. As might bo expected in such a
community there are excellent church and school facilities
and tho town is sufficiently metropolitan to support a small
opora nouso.
Communication is maintained with tho neighboring
cities of Tempo and Phoenix by means of two daily stages.
Three miles east of Mesa City is tho prosperous village
of Lohi, among whoso other industries and features is a
creamery, tho best in Arizona and known throughout tho
territory.
The mesa propor extends to thoriver, four miles north
of Mesa City; on tho south it is almost limitless; a stretch
of country which within ton yoars will be known as; the
Garden Snot of America.
