LOSING GROUND WITH WOMEN. A legislature should be elected this fall that will not spend too much of its time in practical joking. The woman suffrage and prohibition isms have both been tried in the older communi ties and found impractical. Prohibi tion has been virtually abandoned and woman suffrage is a dead letter. There is no reason, therefore, why Arizona, either as a territory or a newly-fledged state, should not profit by the ex perience of others. Even in Massachusetts while the scattering advocates of woman suffrage ask the legislature to pass a law giving the sex the right to vote at municipal elections, they show their distrust of public sentiment by bitterly opposing a proposition that the question be re ferred to the people. The leading Republican journals, like the Boston Journal and the Springfield Union, oppose the passage of the pro posed bill on the ground that there is no evidence that the change is desired by the majority of men or women. After more than thirty years of agita tion only a very small proportion of the women of Maesachueietts feel enough interest in the matter to sign petitions in favor of suffrage. The majority of the women of the most intelligent and thoughtful commonwealth in the Union do not desire the suffrage. Why should they? Before the law in all our states a woman has all the rights and im- muniues granted every vote-casting man, and practically a woman has the best of any man "before an average jury. A jury always decides for a woman if she can make any kind of a showing that will stand in law or equity. ine lacs ot ballot surely robs a woman of no rights of life, liberty or property. As a matter of fact, woman suffrage is not favored by the mass of women or the maBg of men, because it is a barren ideality; it rights no wrongs ; it corrects no disabilities. It is a mere matter of expediency and the mere wish of a few women to vote is of no mora consequence to the state than the mere wish of a few women to enlist in the regular army. Moll Pitcher took ber dead husband's place in the battery of artillery at Monmouth, but we do not, because of this fact, think it ex pedient to enlist women in the regular artillery today. Society would gain nothing by enlargement of the suffrage, and would lose something by the grad ual desheltering, desexing and demo ralizing of woman's power and capacity as a humanizing companion for man As a rule the women would vote with ineir men, whether their men were good, bad or indifferent; if they did not vote with their men they would be come mere masculinities in women's clothes, of which the world has already enough and to spare. In the broadest sense socially and politically, women are, as a rule, but the reflections of their men. When men are cruel and coarse women are no better. The French revolution, the war of the com mune, the old slave couth and the Homestead riot are cases in point Women have assisted at lynchings at the south, and in fact no greater pop ular fallacy exists than the belief that if women voted they would refine and humanize politics ; they would not ; but practical politics would in time desex and demoralize them. Women in the mass are good or bad, just as the mas culine public opinion they respect is good or bad. On the stump Mrs. Lease and Mrs. Gougar are just as coarse as their male associates. In the matter of partisanship women would be just as bad as men. When Judge Maynard was repudi ated by his own party in New York state the woman suffrage party got out their strictly "confidential" circulars for the guidance of their voters. One of these circulars described Judge May nard as "specially entitled to our friendship." "It is," it says, "very im portant to our cause to keep bim on the court of appeals bench. A great effort ia made to defeat him, and every vote is needed. Whatever is said against him, it is our duty to stand by our friends, and the more our friend is as sailed the harder we should work for his success." The recipients of the cir culars are repeatedly warned that whatever they do must be done "quiet ly." These women, "the mothers and wives of the land," did not care whether Maynard had stolen or forged ; if he was sound on the woman suffrage ques tion they were ready to make him judge of the court of appeals. The women in Wyoming vote on all questions con cerning liquor saloons, gambling, the social evil, etc., just about aa men do in states where women do not vote. The effortb of the gentleman of the Catholic congregation to establish a society for raising a new church fund are meeting with even greater success than was expected. The present place of worship is, from an architectural standpoint, neither a credit to the Catholics nor to the town. From the rapidity with which the ball is rolling it looks as if ground would be broken for a new building at no distant day. Well, well ! now they say that there is a leak in the tariff committee and that use is made of the information to run up or depress stocks. Glad to hear that there is some rising value in the tariff tinkers. We have been depressed long enough. Godwin & Avery and The Republi can yesterday placed arc lights in front of their places of business. If every firm in the city would do likewise the streets would present a beautifully il luminated appearance. Statehood for New Mexico is being pushed by Delegate Joseph, but Dele gate Smith iti silent on the subject of Arizona. If "Micky" Stewart had been elected Arizona would have been a state a year ago. T. E. Dalton is mentioned as a can didate for mayor. Mr. Dalton is one of the brightest and most energetic men of the city and would make a worthy and competent officer.
