J. M. SAUNDERS. Other Event of the Day at Wicken-burg. Wickenburg. Auc. 13 (Special Cor respondence of The Republican ) A farewell surprise party given in honor of Mrs. J. M. Saunders by Mrs. Posey and Mrs. Henry Dcatsh took place yes terday afternoon in the Presbyterian church. The many friends and ac quaintances of Mrs. Saunders were all present to spend one more afternoon in company with the guest of honor. The hours went by in the enjoyment of singing. reciting, conversation, guessing contests, and last but not least In the eating of ice cream and cake, which was served to the twenty odd guests in the way of refreshments Mrs C. C Davis gave one of her many humorous recitations, which was rendered in her own inimitable style, and was received by a round of ap plause and much laughter. Mrs. L. V. Crabh contributed a piece entitled "Naughty Nell," which was enjoyed by every one present. Mrs. Henry Deatsch helped to swell the program by sing ing the well known song entitled "Gliding Down the River of the Old Jllssissippi" in her own pleasing manner. The next thing on the program to be given the Saunders family before their departure will be a hay ride Saturday night in honor of the eldest daughter. Miss Pauline, who is as popular among the younger set as her mother is among the older;- A telephone booth lias been erected in the store of Neagle & Bozarth for the accommodation of the public. The booth fills a much needed want, as the telephone exchange Is located In the store, and therefore the phone Is very much in use. Is In town on business. The first meeting of the city coun cil will take place In a few days, ac cording to Mayor Henry Cowell Charlie Wlleutt is in from the Vul ture mine for his regular supplies. He makes these trips so often now that it can hardly be classed as news. Cards were received by the friends of J. C. Reed announcing the fact that they expect t obe at home on or about the 22nd of this month. Mr. Reed and family are now enjoying an overdue vacation in Los Angeles and neighbor ing cities. The following program will take place at the Presbyterian church Sun day: Sunday school 10 a. m.; preach ing by Rev. H. A. Carpenter of New York at 11 a .m.; Christian Endeavor 8 p. m. You are cordially invited to attend. Rev. Mr. Posey will hold services at Peoria this coming Sunday. R. W. Baxter has started the erec tion of a building on the brink of Knob Hill, which, when completed, will take the place of his present business quar ters. The new building will be more commodious than the present one, and as It is being built near the railroad tracks it will mean a great saving, both in time and money. In the haul ing of lumber to and from the cars. Mr. Raxter also Intends to build him self a residence In the newr future near the site of the business building which he is now erecting, with a vl"v to giving his rapidly growing establish ment as much time as possible. K R Rice and Miss Mary Piatt, ac companied by her mother, returned from Phoenix on this morning's train heavily laden with bundles of all de scriptions. Besides, Mr. Rice was sporting a brand new leather suit case which looked as if it dropped Info Wickenburg for a short visit only. The well known and popular couple, are. about to be married. The ceremony will take place at The, bride's residence Sunday morning. Rev. Posey will tie the knot. INTEREST IN IRRIGATION RY PEOPLE OF Judge Kibbey Adresses a Meeting on Water Ussrs Association. Former Governor Kibbey yesterday returned mm Tucson where he hiul pone at the invitation of Professor R. H. Forbes of the university, to address the farmers under the Rillito and the business men of Tucson on the organ ization of a water users association. A project has f..r some time been on foot to form such an association for mak ing the best use of the waters of the Rillito in the irrigation of about lo.oon acres of land lying under It. The advice of Judge Kibbey was naturally sought as he Is perhaps the chief recognized authority in such matters. He prepared the organiza tion of the Salt River Valley Water 1'sers' association, the fir.-t formed un der the reclamation act and whose articles have been copied with com paratively little alteration by subse quently formed nssoclatlons. At the close of his address Judge Kibbey was given an ovation by the audience. His address, an able and interesting one. is printed In full by the Tucson Star. RIVERSIDE-MESQUITE Riverside. Aug. 12. Talk about strange happenings in Arizona, last Wednesday evening, a most severe storm of wind, rain and lia,ll visited us. It was the severest rain in sev eral years and some of the oldest pioneers say that never saw hall in August. The hail stones were of enormous size and fell thickly. P. X. Nelson will have a sale Au gust 1". All parties wishing first clas goods should attend this sale. Oscar Roberts has bought P. X. Nelson's separator and Is going into the dairy business in right shape. Mrs. A. S. Snodgrass and children of Phoenix spent several days with Mrs. H. Criswell this week. Will Walton came up from Buck eye Monday and returned Tuesday. He reports very favorably of Buck eye. At last, after many trials and tribu lations. J. J. Miller has his grain threshed Miller has been ex pecting the thresher since last May. All the thresher crew were ill the first of the week. It was necessary to call a physician and Dr. Hughes responded to the call. They claim the water was the cause. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Doggett are counting their gray hairs and look ing old and wise, as all dignified grandparents should. The little granddaughter arrived at the Bacon home last' Saturday. Both mother and child are doing nicely. Mr. Bacon Is the proudest "papa" in the world. Miss Mollie Morrell of- Tempe Is spending this week with her sister. Mrs. Burk Miller. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Smith and fam ily of Glendale ami Mrs. J. W. Phy and daughter. Mayme, of Murphy, visited Sunday with the Miller fam ily. E. A. Cutting and some relatives arrived Thursday morning from Min nesota. Mr. Cutting went home this summer with the Intention of bring ing all the people back with him that would come. He is mighty glad to get back and thinks Arizona is "It." The Hanson and Miners families of Fowler visited the P. X. Nelson fam ily Sunday. C. T. Hirst was a business visitor through here the first of the week, j Louis Runge is working on the Hall Bros, fruit ranch. I Mrs. W. Criswell and Mts. A. Reynolds visited with the Clarke family in Cartwright Sunday Mrs. Oscar Roberts expects to go to Flagstaff the first of next week. Mr. Roberts will go later on. Will Runge was a' city visitor Tues day. J. J. Miller Is hauling grain to town this week. Mrs. P. X. Nelson and Miss Ruth spent Monday visiting Phoenix friends. MURPHY.- Murphy. Aug. 13. Mr. K. S. Some of the farmers in this district are w earing broad , smiles. They say they have all the Irrigatibn water they want and some have enough to turn into the road. Mr and Mrs. M J. Mumma were out driving Sunday evening. George Kouni has been working his Bermuda grass again. Wesley and John Miller spent Satur day afternoon In Phoenix.
