Mrs. Nicholas has been a resident

past twenty years she has lived in
Tempe. She is survived by her son and
two daughters, Phil Nicholas of Flor

All three were with her at the time
of death. Mrs. Penn and children ar

splendid example of the quality of It.
It is in time of sudden mishap or

A Matter That Is
COMIVIfTTEE REPORT TONIGHT
At a Joint Meeting of the
Tempe Board of Trade
and the Mesa Chamber of
Commerce at the Casa
Loma at 8 o'clock.
There will be a special meeting of
the board of trade and citizens of
Tempe this evening at the Casa Loma
for the purpose of hearing the report
of a joint committee representing the
Tempe board of trade and the MfSa
chamber of commerce on the question
of county division.
This question of subdividing Marico
pa county was broached to the Tempe
board of trade a few days ago by a
committee from Mesa. The Mesa body
lias had the matter under consideration
for the past week or ten days and has
given it deep thought. It is a serious
matter and one that requires much
study. Therefore the Tempe board of
trade at its special meeting a few days
ago appointed a committee to work
with a similar Mesa committee to de
cide upon the boundary lines of the
tentatively proposed new county. This
committee went to Mera Thursday
evening and there met with the Mesa
chamber of commerce. The boundry
lines were decided upon and a com
mittee of three from euch place was
appointed to consider the matter.
It is the opinion of all who have so
far expressed themselves on the ques
tion that it is purely a matter of dol
lars and cents. If the county can be
divided without materially increasing
taxation, then it is to be desired, other
wise not. Appreciating the fact that
the first thing to do Is to ascertain the
taxable value of -the proposed county,
this committee will go to Phoenix this
morning, where it will spend as much
time as may be required gathering this
The joint committee will report this
evening at a joint meeting of the Mesa
chamber of commerce and the Tempo
board of trade. This joint meeting
will be held in the lobby of the Casa
Loma at S o'clock sharp, and it is
especially urged that as many Tempe
people as possible be present, regard
less of whether they are members of
the board of trade or not and regard
less of how they may feel on the ques
tion of county division. A cordial invi
tation has been extended to the Mesa
brethren to be present and It is hoped
that there will be a representative at
tendance of the two towns at the meet
ing to hear the report of the commit
tee. The Tempe members of the com
mittee are I. V. Stewart, C. G. Jones
and Andrew Nielsen. These three will
join the Mesa committee at S o'clock
this morning and will probably spend
the entire day at the court house gath
ering such information as may be nec
essary to make a full and complete re
port. It is understood that if after mature
deliberation the people of Tempe and
Mesa conclude that they desire county
division, there will be no difficulty in
having the constitutional convention
arrange the matter.

of Duck's Certificate
W. W. Thiess of Tucson, an inspect
or of the United States immigration
service, was a visitor here this week.
Mr. Thiess was called here to investi
gate the circumstances of the loss of a
certificate by Yee Duck, the proprietor
of the Tempe house lunch counter,
some time ago. Mr. Thiess says that
the department pays a good deal of
attention to incidents of this kind, for
it has frequently happened that a
Chinaman would report the loss of his
certificate whereas in reality the cer
tificate was at that time being used
ty some other native of China. Mr.
Thiess took testimony on the case
here and gathered up all the informa
tion he could find which will be
turned over to the department for its
