Destruction of the Former A. C. Baker : Land Office, at Phoenix. Arizona, on

Residence On North Second
IN EARLY MORNING
Avenue.
A lobs of nearly two thousand dol
lars and the passing of one of the
Id landmarks of the town, was the
lesult yesterday morning when the
the 12th day of December, 1911
Claimant names aa witnesses:
Dick Pincham, of Avondale, Ariz.;
J. Wilford Johnson, of Avondale.
Ariz.; Harry E. "Weaver, of Avondale,
Ariz., and Homer B. King, of Phoe-
six-room frame house on Xorth Sec- n'x Ariz.
nd avenue, just north of Merrymaii I
.t Hayt's undertaking parlors caught j
lire and burned to the ground.
The fire was discovered about 4:45
o'clock a. m. by Mr. and Mrs. John
M. Hutchinson, in the rear of the
room in which they were sleeping,
when it had gained such headway
that they were forced to flee, grab
bing a handful of clothes as they
went. Four other roomers also fared
little better, and furniture and all
was a total loss. The furniture was
owned by T. J. Walker of Long
Hunch, and the house by II. D. Wil
kinson, who has a small amount of
insurance on the building.
Mr. Hutchinson had $7.r. in bills in
the house, which also perished in
the flames, and with their furniture,
clothes and other things which also
wont, they were left in a position to
start life over again. A few months
ago he and Mrs. Hutchinson lost a
ston, and it seems their troubles are
multiplying. Mr. Hutchinson is a
carpenter and has been working on
the Adams hotel until lately.
Wjlien the fire was at its height.
someone said a man with rheumatism
was iji one of the rooms, and was
unable to got out, but the firemen
went back in. broke open the door
and found that the, man had crawled
out through the window.
The four firemen on the job had
things pretty well their own way,
and with one each on a wagon, it
kept the other one working hard to
connect the hose, the nozzle, and di
rect the heavy hose on the fire. Xot
many of the volunteers showed up.
as the alarm was not generally heard.
Women at the house two doors north
helped the firemen and gave them a
little breakfast after the fire.
The origin of the fire has not been
determined, and probably never will
be. though the theory of defective
electric wires is advanced as a pos
sible cause.
