Disgusting" Performances.
At intervals we are afflicted
with a class of mountebanks, says,
the Los Angeles Newa, claiming
to be escapes from convent life,
recalcitrant Catholic priests, or
something of the sort. These peri
patetic bipeds wander about the
country relating to gaping crowds
disgusting stories concerning the
immoralities of the Catholic
priesthood and the horrors of con
vent life in America, never for
getting, however, to charge a
handsome admission fee to all who
desire to listen to their prurient
talk. These retailers of nasty sto
ries have mostly been kicked out
of the Catholic church as un
worthy a visible connection with
Christian men and women, or
have proven themselves the basest
of imposters, who should as sum
marily be kicked out of all decent
society; but, nevertheless, the
Puritanic mind seems willing to
drink in and accept as truth the
statements of these people, and
the charlatans pocket many du
cats by pandering to Protestant
prejudices. It is no credit to the
Protestant denominations that
they extend encouragement to
these creatures, and we are wil
ling to believe ihat a large class
of the Protestant world shares our
disgust at their performances.
The latest appearance upon this
coast is that of Edith O'Gorman
so she styles herself who claims
to be an "escaped nun," and who,
if the reports in the San Francisco
papers are to be believed, claims
to excell all previous comers in the
nastiness of her "so-called" re
velations. The "Western papers
some months ago contained any
thing but a complimentary his
tory of the gentle Edith, who de
lights in retailing the history of
her adventures with a Reverend
Father to hearers who pay fifty
cents apiece for the privilege af
listening to the delectable details.
It may seem singular that men
and women, supposed to be de-.
cent, should attend exhibitions of
the kind referred to; but then it
must be remembered that "model
artist" shows and theatres where
vulgarity is the chief feature, are
frequented by those claiming re
spectability. The Sisters of Chari
ty, whom, this new importation is
said to assail, have, asa clasa, won
for themselves the deserved ad
miration of, the civilized world,
Their charities are innumerable;,
their sublime, devotion to Chris
tian works is known, and recog
nized of all men. No callof suffer
ing humanity has ever fell un
heeded upon the ear of a Sister of
Cnarity; and dying Protestant, as
well as Catholic, daily invoke the
blessing of God upon those de?
voted women who, unmindful of
self, forgetful. of all save Christian
duty, devote themselves to its
life-long performance. That these
noble women, living illustrations
of the theory that man partakes
somewhat of the Divine, compel
ling the 8cofifer to believe, from
the evidence of his own senses,
that Christians do exist in these
days, should be reviled, and slan
dered in the presence of a San
Francisco audience without the
reviier being hissed from the
stage, only illustrates the intens
ity of religious denominational
rancor.
A detective officer makes the
annexed statement to the San
Francisco Post:
Last Thursday morning I got
up as usual about- 5 o'clock, and
went from my office in Duncan's
building down on California street.
I stepped into Cady's saloon on
my way, and while there chatting
with tke barkeeper and porter
and one other man, a woman eng
tered the saloon, and requested to
have her bottle filled with brandy,
she looked as if she was suffering
from excessive drink, and almost
on -the verge of delirium tremens.
She received brandy and went up
towards the Buss House; .Her ap
pearance of course excited com
ment, and I inquired who sho
was. No one knewlv except the
gentleman present, and he said
she was Miss O'Gorman, "the es
caped nun,"- "who lectured the
evening previous.
Reporter Have you any other
reason for believing it is Miss
O'Gorman.
The Detective Yes, or I would
not have told you what I have.
When I notice persons once I
know them ever fterwards; and
I went to hear that lecture that
evening, paying my fifty cents to
pass the doorkeeper, just to see if
it was she who got the brandy,
and I found it was.
The Extreme of Meanness.
They are very strict in the man
agement of their schools in Bos
ton. The School Board recently
refused to permit teachers to be
absent from their charge for the
purpose of singing in Mr. Gil
more'a Jubilee chorus, even
though substitutes should be .pro
vided. The Traveler says that "a
strong feeling of opposition to the
Jubilee was developed in the
Board." Opposition to the Jubilee
Why, we thought that every man,
woman boy, girl, babe and suckl
ing in Boston was ready to lay
down life itself in behalf of the
Jubilee, should such immolation
be necessary to the success of the
festival! And here are School
Committeemen actually opposing
it. It's a bother. N. Y. Tribune.

JNDIAN DEPREDATIONS.
By a recent Act of Congress, a
copy of which is in my possession,
a more efficient mode has been
provided for the collection of
claims against the Government for
depredations committed by the
Indians.
Having superior facilities for
the prosecution of such claims,
and much actual experience in the
business, I can, with some confi
dence, say to my fellow-citizens
who have suffered loss of property
by these lawless tribes, that where
the proof is ample, there is no
good reasonwhy each claim should
not be paid. Within a very short
time the rules and regulations to
be prescribed by th6 Secretary of
the Department named in the Act
of Congress referred to, will reach
me, when I shall be ready to prose
cute any claim that may be placed
in my hand3 for that purpose. '
