Catching a Rabbit for His Girl.
An Qicar Wilde young man
who lives on the North Side and
smoke cigarettes heard his
adored express a wih for a rab
bit. Wandering at duk past a
residence surrounded bv a spa
cious lawn, and pondering upon
possibilities of raising lucre
enough to purchase a long-eared
pet for thi'- demsel, his attention
was attracted by a white object
on the lawn. Closer examination
showed it. to be a rabbit. In the
shadow of some shrubs the little
animal set on. its haunches, with
ears erect. He chuckled to him
self as he saw how he couid save
the money he was going to bor
row to buy a rabbit witlrand yet
get the rabbit. He climbed the
fentfe, undismayed by the four
inch gash in his wall-paper trou
sers, and stole soiftiy upon the
unsuspecting rabbit. The rabbit
never stirred. Taking off his
elegant tile, that he had stood
Dunlap off for that morning, he
pounced upon the poor thing and
jammed the hat down over it,
and tho two white ears stuck up
through the new tiletop. It was
an iron rabbit. Chicago Herald.

Mrs. Gen. Lew Waliaee, wife
of the American minister, has
been permitted to ee the great
est beauty of Prince Feramorz'
harem in Turkey. Two wonder
fully utfly black eunuchs met tl.e
Visitor at tho iron gate of a beau
tiful garden . and conducted her
to a large room rather, barren of
furniture, but hung with fine
eastern draperies. Here she
found the prince's latest acquis
ition, whom she thus describes
in the Independent: "Among
the billowy cushions and vapor
ous veilings rose the young face.
Oh! what a revelation of beauty!
uulifted in a curious, questioning
way to see what manner of wo
men these are who come from
the ends of the earth with un
veiled lace, and o about tho
world alone, and have to think
for themselves poor things!
The expression was that of a
lovely child waking from summer
slumber in the happiest humor,
ready for play. A sensitive, ex
quisite face fair as the first in
women while the angel was yet
unfallen. A perfect oval, the lips
a scarlet thread, and, oh! those
wonderful Asiatic eyes! lustrous,
coal black, long rather than
round, beaming under joined
eyebrows."

By incidents like the one re-
lated below Oscar Wilde justifie.-
his assertion that American so
ciety is rude even to boorish tiess:
"In Saratoga last week I stopped
at the States and Congress liall
two of the. best hotels, which
one would suppose be patronized
by cultured people. While talk
ing with Judge Brady there a
jreat crowd came around us,
mostly women, and, finding it a
bore to be thus started at, 1 mov
ed on into the office. There they
came flocking in after us. I went
to the billiard-rooms, but found
no refuge there. The women
rushed there ladies in silks and
crapes and laces, with diamonds
in their ears, bringing their
daughters with them. To bulk
the pursuit utterly, I fled to the
bar-room. Will you believe me
that they came there in ten
minutes fifty to one hundred of
them filling up the place al
most? Jt seems to me a most
painful and dreadful thing the
bold-face staring and half audible
comment. It seems much worse
than Ihe conduct of abandoned
women. Why didn't I sav.
'What'llyou have ladies?' Oh,
it wouldn't have done any good,
"and all the country would have
said 1 had insulted the ladies at
Saratoga."
Old Chief Pocotello, now at the
Fort H-dl agency, in answer to
itn inquiry relative to the true
Christian character of a former
Indian agent at that place, gave
in very terse language the moat
accurate description of a hypo
crite that was ever given to the
public: "Ugh! Too much God
and no flour."
A fact little known as that the
United States nickel five-cent
piece furnishes a key to metric
measures and weights. This
coin is two centi metres in diam

listening to the extravagant yarn
of ii person as lone as her patience
would allow, said to him:
'Friend, what a pity it is a sin to
lie, wheu it seems so necessary to
your happiness!"
