The Wit ef a French Manager.
A manager ought to gpossess
first, the diplomacy of a Talley
rand, in order to get rid, politely,
of petitioners for "private boxes,
importunate authors, patrons of
ballet maidens, fanatic compos
ers, starters of phenomena, and
producers of stars; second, the
stoicism of a Brutus, to resist the
caprices and pretentions of the
crowd, both feminine and mascu
line, assembled behind the scene;
third, the self denial ot St, An
thony, to withstand the seduc
tions of his actresses, and also
the nose of St. Anthony's com
panion to scent, out promising at-

patience of Jot), to support the
demands of the public, the carp
ing critics, and the jealousy of ri
vals and competitors.
The most knowing managers
are naturally those who have pre
viously served in the dramatic
ranks themselves. One of the.ie,
an ex-tenor who had made his
fortune, and who, during his vo
cal career, by bis hoarseness, his
demands and caprices had driven
his employer half crazy,
when he took a thealt
e on his
own account, the severest of task
masters and managers. The ac
quisition of power changes the
nature of men, but very rarely to
their advantage. He would suf
fer no poutings or indispositions.
I'lhe most trifling negligence was' per cent, per annum. All these
' punished by a heavy fine. Tho 'may fail, and the aunual product
least fraction of the terms of an
engagement was met by legal
proceedings by gendarms, if ne
cessary. In 1853, when he took in hand
the direction of the theatre in

But the cunning old singer
who knew all the tricks of his
trade, took his precautions in
consequence. Every evening
when Oswald sang he dressed up
a good looking supernumary in
exactly the same costume as the
fickle tenor, wiih orders to make
himself conspicuous behind the
scenes until the close of the per
formance. The constant pres
ence of this subsidiary personage
soon grew into an actual annoy-
to Oswald. So one evening,
between two acts of the Muette,
he asked his manager. "Who is
that fellow dressed up exactlv

Referring to the coinage of sil
ver dollar.-3, President Arthur
says: "(Jf the enure amount
thus far milled, not more than
$35,000,000 are in circulation.
The mass of accumulated coin
has grown so great that in the
vault room at present, avilable
storage is scarcely sufficient to
contain it.' It is not apparent
why it is desirable to continue
this coinage so enormously in
excess of the public demand."
It may not be apparent to tho
President of the United States,
but it is to the people. The
thirty-five millions in circulation,
anil the othei millions now crow
ding the insufficient vault room
at Washington, repreheutimr the
wealth-creating power of the
mighty West, the home of an
industry upon which all others
are baed, and tho source of that
material wealth upon which was
founded, and now securely rests,
a system of credit without a
parallel in any of the nations of
the earth. It is not cotton, it is
not wool, wheat or provisions;

It became necessary yesterday
for Dr. Townsend, the physician
in charge of the Paterson small

might be presented to the meet

It was thought imprudent to
allow them to go down through
the city to the Recorder's otfl jt',
and on the other hand Recorder
Greaves did not care to go to the
hospital to administer the oath.
After pondering the matter he
